The problem some motorists may have in comprehending the "no overall delay" thing is possibly related to their seeming habit of breaking up their journeys into a series of MUSTGETTONEXTTHINGs, where they can experience twenty or more discrete instances of being delayed in their quest to return to tailgating the next 'real' (motorised (and travelling as fast as it can)) vehicle in front of them in as little as a quarter of a mile. If they allow a gap of more than three metres to appear in front of them, they have failed. If they find themselves at two sets of red lights in a row behind the same preceding vehicle, they have failed, even if current physical laws would have made it impossible to be otherwise. If another real vehicle interposes itself between them and the car previously directly in front of them, they have failed. They may only turn their failure around by overtaking the car which was in front of them on the way into the office car park and getting into the lift first.

Today's rubbish driving...

Rattling downhill on cobbles in the wind/rain yesterday evening when was almost hit by someone who'd spotted a gap in the 'real' traffic and took aim at me whilst starting a 3-point turn. Gathered myself and cycled past as they reversed back onto the other side of the road. When I stopped at the next junction they pulled up alongside me with the driver smiling and waving greetings. Turns out I know them....perhaps the season of goodwill extends to festive/friendly rubbish driving?...they then sped off and parked on the greenway...

Its the silly season again on Dean Bridge...
Wingpig's MUSTGETTONEXTTHING analysis covers the specifics.
Perhaps I wouldn't mind quite so much, but that's one hell of a drop.

You'd hacve to be going some / be a monster bunnyhopper to clear the wall surely?
Posted 10 years ago # -
I think you'd clear the wall fine, but the bike may be left behind.

Coming up Broughton Street earlier, had an insanely close pass from a Ritchie's Scaffolding Lorry. Caught them up again at the junction on North Bridge/Royal Mile. Filtered to ASL, which they obviously disliked and again made sure they overtook me across the junction ridiculously close only to join the queue of traffic in front. I didn't filter past again and waited behind it in the queue.
On the filtering part coming up North Bridge- I was already in the bus lane when the queue became so packed to my right that there was no space to filter in. I had to filter in somewhere and so chose to filter to the ASL. It wasn't an aggressive piece of filtering - I'm not sure what else I could realistically have one but it clearly upset the lorry driver.

The opening sequence of Mike Judge's film 'Office Space' illustrates the stupidity and futility of commuting by car perfectly. If you haven't seen it, definitely recommended.

Cyclist clipped a kerb [at Dean Bridge], somersaulted over a 4ft bridge parapet, plunged 40ft on to rocks - and only grazed his thumb.

Wow, that's some going! (is the wall only 4ft high? Walked over it every day for a few years and could have sworn it was higher)

Re wingpigs comment I think he's right. I saw a great video where an American chap who commuted on a highway everyday decided that instead if competing for space he'd actually maintain a higher than average gap between him and the next car.
This name that impatient people and others needing to change lanes could filter. He found that doing this only impacted his journey by 5 minutes. He was also less stressed. Basically he figured that 95% of delays are caused by impatient drivers rather than bad ones. And that this could be fixed with 10% of drivers just chilling out a bit and leaving space. Will find the vid on my laptop and post when not on my phablet.

Quick update on my video posted last week. Took it to the police and they have reviewed it and I got a message back saying "not enough evidence". I asked what constitutes enough evidence as the next closest thing is actually hitting me or the trailer but I've been unable to talk to the PC dealing with it as he's off duty until 11pm Friday night, by which time i'll be 6 hours into my work night out so won't be calling him then. I'll try to get him Saturday but overall it's disappointing.

ARobComp - something like this? Anti traffic eats traffic
I saw this several years ago and since then have always tried to do this when travelling by car. My experience is that it really seems to work :)Posted 10 years ago # -
@condor2378
Keep at it, don't swallow the fob off. Your grievance is justified. Demand answers from the PC's skipper.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Best of luck condor. From my experience with the police, yes, they do need to hit you for the police to do anything.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Obviously not the same thing, but shows what the police can do when social attitudes change - previously drink driving.

Also, presumably, this policy/action wasn't a result of focus groups or Community Council 'something must be done' input.

@condor2378 - that's rubbish. I hope the PC involved at least lets you know what would constitute enough evidence. Since it appears twitter has brought about action from Police Scotland for the cereal offender, perhaps as Min suggested a couple of pages ago, we should be exploiting social media if this doesn't work. I am happy to do my bit if I can figure out how to play twitter...

Nein, I am a German, and how did you know my name was Kammer?

Some interesting information here about what video evidence the police can and can't use
That is indeed very interesting. However, I did have an incident when I had to swerve on to the other side of the road to prevent a car turning right in front of me from running me over; and the police only went and "had a word" with the guy, despite it being on HD video.
But their point about having limited resources is indeed valid, so they probably had to accept that it wasn't serious enough to warrant court time.
Disappointing, but when you know the reasons, it's easier to accept.

KM10CZG Silver Peugeot 308S
Drove east along West Maitland Street on the wrong side of the road in the westbound Tram / Bus lane and stopped at the red light. When the lights changed to green (for left & straight on) proceeded to turn right up Torphichen Street. Avoid!

To those who have an issue with a Royal Mail van. Probably the easiest details to remember
look on the rear (high up)and you will see the office/van code.
Eg West delivery office covering Eh11/12/29/30 will be W1,W2 etc (should also be on the front above the windscreen)
So the letters relate to the office & the numbers the specific van
As for hire vans. These are still driven regular RM staff. Seasonal employees are pretty much exclusively used for sorting in the mail centres. Collection/delivery is still covered by regular employeesPosted 10 years ago # -
FOUR incidents tonight between Viewforth/Dundee St junction and Russell Road.
1) Lights turn green for me to join Dundee St from Viewforth and a sporty hatchback races through the red light across the front of me, only to decant a passenger at Gibson Terr, opposite the Fountainbridge complex. I shouted, "Red means stop" as the passenger got out and the driver then made a punishmnet pass at the turn-in to the complex.
2) Passing under the Western Approach Road, another sporty hatchback is right on my back wheel, so I braked to sop him trying to force his way past before I'd safely cleared the arch of the W App viaduct.
3) A large red Lexus or similar passes me under the railway bridge (bad at any time of day IMO) with no lights on - this is at 20:35! A flash of my lights at least got the message across and they were on as it reached the zig-zag corner.
4) And having been coming back from seeing my mother in hospital, I was very nearly making a one-way trip there myself. Black cab MK52 YPT flies round the corner towards me with half of the cab on my side of the white lines! As I was in primary, indicating to turn right to the zig-zag, all I could do was force my hand into the side window to avoid being hit.
Of course, the cabbie didn't like me trying to avoid being killed and stopped under the bridge (blocking the lane) to get out and shout at me. His passenger must have been drunk/on drugs/plain stupid as she had the nerve to stick her head out the window and shout, "That was your fault!" at me!!!
I made it perfectly clear that he was well over the line as well as reading out his number plate to him to 'mark his card'. I stopped half way up the zig-zag to note the reg on my phone and saw a cab come round the corner slower than average. Although it was dark, and at distance, I am reasonably sure it might have been the same guy after dropping off his dim-witted fare, presumably spoiling for round two had I still been on the road. Watch out for that nutcase.

Would be the 04 plate Toyota Supra that squeezed past me as I was heading across Cluny Gardens on Braid Avenue at about 7.50am this morning. I was nicely positioned to go past a parked car but the Supra driver gave me so little room that I could have kicked the car from my bike. It would have been nothing to have waited until there was room to pass safely.
Followed the car along Canaan Lane where it pulled into Astley Ainslie hospital. Decided following it any further would not have achieved much.

This mornings van driver who left the gap and waved through a black car to a turning off brougham Street onto Drumdryan street through the empty left hand lane as the traffic up ahead was moving through the lights.
I had enough time to shoot up the left lane but vision was blocked by the que of traffic to the right. Black car comes through and I have to skid to stop in time. Black car slightly apologetic but van driver looks at me like it's my fault. Idiot.

Probably me (driving van to Penicuik and cycling back) - apologies to the cyclist at 8:10ish this morning travelling towards King's Buildings on Blackford Avenue across the junction with West Saville Terrace. Whenever I cycle this bit I'm aware how the uphill section isn't really wide enough for an overtake and inevitably you hold up cars or get a close pass. I hung back but overtook said cyclist as we set off from the lights - road ahead clear and plenty of space for a safe overtake. Unfortunately another slower cyclist appeared a bit later up the hill (not sure where from but possibly set off from the side), and so I slowed down to wait behind it up the hill - meaning that the cyclist I had overtaken then appeared on my inside and I was now effectively blocking him from overtaking the slower cyclist. Tough one as my intentions were good, but ended up essentially performing a MGIF manoeuvre. Tricky bit of road for all that.....
Cycle back from Penicuik was thankfully uneventful and remarkably quick as usual....

So many instances in an hour's walk home from work. Too many to detail but listed below.
Two phone checkers, one of which drove off with said phone in same hand as he was holding the wheel one-handedly, the other who I startled by knocking on his window and motioning 'no phone' to him.
One bus lane using motorcyclist.
Two cars with only a singke headlight working.
Two idiotic instances of parking, one across the parked cars on Stenhouse roundabout, the other on the double yellows at Asda Chesser directly opposite the t-junction for the Corn Exchange.
One blatant ASZ stop where it was approached by the driver on a red light and he stopped his vehicle fully in the box itself.
One partial 'I don't know where my bonnet ends' type of ASZ encroachment. Except the lady's car's wheels and wingmirrors were also over the first stop line of the box.
Stopped counting after sixteen instances of cars failing to indicate.
I'd say I was glad to be walking but also had interactions with two pavement cyclists who didn't appear to have any discernible mitigating reasons for cycling on the pavement. Also with a guy on the Broomhouse shared path who was cycling on the wrong part. Straight at me. Stubbornly expecting me to get out of his way when the cycling side was clear both ways. I even got a shoulder check once he'd passed.
Glad I'm home for the night, to be honest.

Van driver who decided to drive in excess of 40mph on completely the wrong side of the road in a residential area.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Instance of driving that I will choose to interpret that despite Christmas indulgence and indolence, and the toll of 35 years, I still have a beautiful bottom.
Why else would the driver of one of those I-can't-afford-a-real-fast-one cars have hung revvily on my back wheel, only to powerskim past to the clearly slow moving convoy of cars a few seconds ahead?
Plainly couldn't drag his or her eyes off it.
