Ah, John Bains...finest Scotch Pies (and lots of other things) in Edinburgh. I know it's got nothing to do with rubbish driving, but I haven't had breakfast yet and I'm starving...

Lots of construction trucks on my commute this morning. Had one on Portobello Rd change lane alongside me, with no indicators, into a bus lane. No numberplate visible.
Luckily I had my Jedi senses enabled and stayed back.

Tesco car park onto Easter Road when a driver pulled up to my left indicating right,

This happens to me at least 3 times a year. I have seen it happening to other cyclists too.

Kaputnik: I detest this roundabout with a passion. It's one of the most dangerously designed pieces of infrastructure closely following the Haymarket tramlines layout and, combined with the ignorance and self-entitlement of some drivers, it has the very real potential to be a deathtrap.

Several instances of sh*t driving experienced this morning on a 3.3 mile commute:

    1) Van who squeezed me at the end of the bus lane West-bound on Gorgie Road where the Water of Leith toucan crossings are.

    2) Small red car reversing recklessly out of a space on the Stenhouse Roundabout. Same part of the roundabout as in Kaputnik's photo. Second 'parking space' in from the roundabout exit so obscured by another parked car. Black Range Rover spotted the red car at the last minute (fair enough as the red car twirp swung his car backwards out of the space at a stupid pace) and slammed on his anchors. I had anticipated the reversing car and the Range Rover however the woman in the silver Fiesta positioned behind me as close to my rear wheel and as far to my right as possible (even though I was central in the junction) did not and squeezed me almost seeing the stopped Range Rover too late.

    3) A silver BMW thing that looks suspiciously like a car with its rear half sliced off, the driver of which thought it was acceptable to pass me on Broomhouse Road inches from my handlebar. Twice. At traffic island pinch points.

    4) Not one, but two cars that merged in right in front of me with excessive use of acceleration to do so when they realised I intended to keep my line on the road at the end of the Broomhouse Road bus lane (on the corner leading into the Broomhouse Roundabout). Yes, well done - you indicated. No, that does not mean I have to let you in - especially when I am already where you want to move your vehicle to.

    5) Likewise with a silver car at the bus lane end of South Gyle Broadway. A queue of cars coming off the Broadway roundabout at the first exit to go onto the road to the small roundabout marking South Gyle Crescent and Redheughs Avenue - yet the silver car driver seemed to think that they could sit directly on my right as I'd taken primary because I wanted the Redheughs Avenue exit. Where she thought she could go with traffic directly queued up in front of me I don't know, but I have to admit to being deliberately obtuse by moving right in front of her bonnet and keeping myself in her way.

None of these drivers would have arguably tried these moves with another car, so why am I any different? I don't pootle around either so they rarely lose much time behind me waiting for places they'd overtake a car sized road occupant.

Total moron morning on the roads. RAGE!

Black taxi MK10 SVD - driven by an impatient man with poor spatial awareness.

I was ahead and holding my position on the right hand lane on Bristo Place.

Cue taxi slowly catching up and trying to go alongside me on the right hand turn. Swear he was trying to nudge me into bike lane. Road had been gritted but to drive so close is basically stupid. Even if life is cheap surely Mr Taximan likes to avoid scratches to his cab.

Partly to blame ... I was riding Paper Bicycle which infuriates some people with it's civilised mechanical beauty ;-) Also had nice steady lights.

When he came alongside I asked him if he was trying to knock me off my bike.

    Think he said 'yes'.

I had a van, evidently distressed at having to slow down over the speed ramps, attempt to overtake when there was less space than its length remaining before I reached the east end of Montgomery Street.

Silver transit-like van that barrelled up the 'ahead only' lane of Queensferry Road westbound just before the turn off for Craiglieth shops/Telford/Drylaw and, having gone through the 'ahead only' green light, then veered right and planted himself in front of both the two queues of cars legitimately going right, and the cyclists similarly queuing at the ASL. When right filter came on, he disappeared off towards Telford Road, having jumped a 20-odd vehicle queue. Caught up with him at the Telford Rd. junction that has a right turn into Drylaw, where he had gone along the right-hand, right-turn-only lane and - against a red light - had parked himself beyond the ASL where he waited for the green filter to come on. Then off he went, comfortably exceeding the 20 mph limit in Drylaw itself.

Me, driving quite a long way across Edinburgh before I realised that the reason people were flashing their lights at me was that I had forgotten to turn mine on...

@fimm I'm extra paranoid about doing that. I tend to notice quickly when I try to check my speed, and can't read the speedo. It's easy to forget when I drive out of the lit garage!

    Although, strictly speaking:

    113

    You MUST
    ...
    - use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
    ...

Not sure how the "except..." on that then tallies with:

    115

    You should also
    - use dipped headlights, or dim-dip if fitted, at night in built-up areas and in dull daytime weather, to ensure that you can be seen

@PS interesting. If I've read that correctly I wasn't breaking the law ("...MUST ... except on a road which has lit street lighting ... should ... use dipped lights..."). Given that everyone can see unlit cyclists I assume a white car would be visible... (<sarcasm alert>)

@twq there must be some form of lighting on the instruments in this car even when the lights are off, otherwise I assume I would have noticed sooner. (It is a City Car Club car. The last CCC car I drove was a Ford; this one was a Toyota. The last time I drove a car it was the BMW that we hired for our holiday in September...)

Speed Fresh Exotic van, back lights on left back side out. (smashed) Nearly took me out as we were both turning left onto Buccleuch street from Melville drive.

Only serious braking on my part meant just a small collision. They rev'ed and drove off. Will be reporting to police.

50 yards from my house, and I could have been killed. Rather annoyed.

    Speed Fresh Exotic?

You'll find their van(s) parked or double parked at Argyle Place.
Not sure how many they have. About to go by there now.

    Glad you're ok.

Yes, I shop there too, and in fact had just been there. Van parked, blocking whole left lane as usual. They must have left 30 seconds after I did.

Not a happy bunny. Closest I have come in a long time. Furious about the fact that while I am not to blame, if I had cycled more defensivly I would have taken lane and been behind them for turn, I usually do that. But the lane was full of cars, with no space to merge, so I didn't.

I noticed that the lights were out on the Speedfresh van only the other day. Let me know how you get on with the Police, if you get nowhere I'll report their decrepit vans to VOSA as a concerned resident of Argyle Place. And get some pictures of the persistent double parking and write to my councillors in same capacity. It's not like it's a route for double decker buses or anything!

My rubbish driving was a convertible Audi that pulled out infront of me as I entered Valleyfield Street (not in a "we nearly hit" sort of a way) then went down the street at about 5mph, with the brakes on most of the time. Then an empty pack of fags was thrown out of the drivers window. There appeared to be a kid or 2 in the back seat. He then turned right at the end and kept the slow speed up. Not sure if he was just preoccupied with smoking or was attempting some sort of punishment go-slow on me.

    Registration ended VAJ. Indeed.

The silver 4x4 (S004 - didn't catch the last three characters of the reg) who overtook me North-bound on South Gyle Access. Nothing in the right-hand lane but the driver still felt it necessary to pass me so close I could have touched the vehicle if I'd have extended my arm fully and hadn't been gesticulating my distaste for the pass via some choice hand signals.

Driver disappeared from view down South Gyle Crescent but I lost them as under the weather and couldn't keep up. Suspect it's probably the same t**spot driver who works in the Ettrick/Tweed/Teviot BoS complex who I had two specific close-pass-run-ins with towards the end of last year.

+1 for anything that will stop speedfresh double parking on a junction and driving like someone who doesn't care about anyone else.

Apart from driving badly he's just broken the park's by-laws.

They state that no commercial vehicles can use this road.

The 2 idiots going straight through red light on the ped crossing on Shandwick Pl. going east towards Princes St. 1 Black Cab and 1 silver Yaris (distinctly non bus, cycle or taxi shaped!!)barreled straight through at about 20 or 30 mph. Airport 100 was sitting on the left waiting correctly, anyone stepping out from behind it on the crossing would have been mush. About the 3rd or 4th time I've seen these lights blatantly ignored, fortunately for the imbeciles they got through the lights at Ryans Bar so couldn't be informed of their microscopic genitalia.

You can even find accounts, from perturbed cyclists, dating from the grand old days of uk.rec.cycling .

Was the parked driver who pulled into traffic in the Grassmarket (opposite the Apex), completely oblivious to me. Literally wasn't even looking at the road.

I had to shout ("Hey!") and swerve.

If I'd been cycling where the ASA would have wanted me to be, I'd almost certainly have been hit.

    PS Honourable mentions:

    (1) The muppet behind who beeped at me as I was approaching the left turn onto Holyrood Park Road. (No space to overtake, you tool!)

    (2) The car that overtook me going down the hill in the park. I accept I had been going slowly when I first started going downhill, but I was up to 28mph when he sped past. (So how fast was he going?)

You know the signs that clearly state that no "commercial vehicles" are allowed in the park?

Is that just one of those laws, like ASL stopping, that police choose to not enforce?

Monday's bad driving TBH but I'm still annoyed. 5.45 pm so dark, cycling past the Dominion Cinema in Morningside, small black car (SK52 ...) double-parked, but it had it's hazards on so that's ok;) I'm coming up behind, it just pulls out (no indicating, still on hazards, no actual normal lights on) so I have to swerve alongside it, I tap on window and am instantly given a two-fingered salute by the delightful driver who obviously knew I was there but did not give a flying. Lovely.

Woman in a car parked accross my driveway honked me as I pulled into the pavement. Apparently she wanted to pull away across my path. If only cars had some sort of signaling device to alert other road users of your intentions ....she's a local though so I'm sure I'll see her again.

Driver of LRT vehicle 203 being the No.10 heading south along Elm Row at 08:45 really didn't give the cyclist he overtook at speed going past the end of Montgomery Street much space, especially considering he was just going to pull into the Elm Row stop straight afterwards.

Big grey van parked outside our door. I was on fully loaded tandem aiming to pull into space between its between its bonnet and big black bin, when suddenly with no lights or indicators he pulled out into the road. Cue much shouting from me. Turns out he also didn't have his seatbelt on (no he didn't get out and punch me, but I was right next to his passenger window and could see him out it on after our little 'engagement'.

    What a bleep.

Dark grey fiesta sitting at lights after Dean bridge, lights at red so going nowhere... I'm filtering up the left to get to the ASL... driver decides to pull over to the left to try and stop me getting past... handle bars smack wing mirror and leaves it hanging!

    I cycled on

No point in his maneuver since he couldn't go anywhere but will cost him a bit to get that repaired, idiot

Today is the first day I'm commuting with a camera running. Not really because of any particular recent incidents, but more just a general slow rise in driving that requires me to be alert to keep myself safe.

    Slightly depressed about it...
