I would not have presumed anything here. Doing so in situations like this can lead to broken body parts.

I got this video of a Lothian Bus almost wiping out another cyclist at the same place and same time:

Good shout from whoever was shouting. That was quite scary to watch.

Stupid female close-passing me to tell me I should have a helmet. Why does this make me so angry?

Because you were offended (both senses).

    "offended in both senses"?
I don't understand. Would you explain?

    Perhaps too much 'shorthand'.

You were offended (rightly) because you had been offended against!

SM08 TMY (Beat up small silver peugeot?) Doesn't like me going into the ASL box in front of her as the lights change at Cameron Toll so over takes and cuts right into me at the Old Dalkeith Road northbound exit forcing me into the curb.

I yell obscenities and the 1st 2 drivers waiting at lights in the opposite direction provide sympathy having seem the whole thing.

3rd car is a Police van with 2 officers who do... NOTHING.

    @chdot thankyou.
I think my initial reaction was along the lines of "What gives you the right to tell me...?"

I think that I'm glad I didn't respond... I suspect we'd have just got in to a shouting match. It probably goes to show that there's not much point in trying to educate people about road use in that sort of setting, as I guess most people would react in a similar way...

Dark oldish Toyota Corolla or something gave me a colse pass and beep on Angle Park Terrace between the Diggers and the next set of lights. Caught it up about 20s later at the red light at Ardmillan Terrace, slowing to yell a very loud "BEEP BEEP!" through the passengers window*.

Never saw the car again as it got snarled up in the next lot of traffic and lights (caused mainly by construction vehicles from the development of the old Weston's biscuit factory, between the colonies off Slateford Road.)

Had another close pass from RJ10 UKB this morning, in almost exactly the same place, 10m along the road. I was signalling to move out to go round a parked car, and he screamed past leaving no room. Got his face on camera this time, so perhaps the police can act. They didn't last time, as it was a company car.
I haven't reported it yet, or uploaded video. But here is the previous pass:

Here's the two passes in one video. He jumped right on the defensive when I confronted him. Not sure I'm happy with how I handled it, let me know your thoughts.

Some 'thoughtful' parking during my 70 mile ride on Sunday:

Co-Op car park at end of S Queensferry cycle path

Highways maintenance vehicle on the A876 S Approach Road, just south of the Kincardine and Clackmannanshire Bridges, blocking access to the cycle flyover, forcing people onto a dangerously-fast road ...

... and ignoring the fact they could simply have parked up a few metres down the road out of everyone's way where there is off-road parking space.

Near Penicuik around 10.45 this morn.

Cycling with another LB rider. We were two abreast in some bits as traffic wasn't that busy. Had rear lights out so low but visible. Bike lanes have actaully been re-painted

M113 JPH or MI13 JPH is behind and sounding horn. Other rider behind me waves him past. He toots again and then third time so other rider gives him finger. I give him a friendly wave not realising that anything 'bad' has happened. The toots weren't friendly btw but longer and impatient (so much so tha tI was sure it was at another car).

Anyway... M113 JPH or MI13 JPH decides to overtake and then put on brakes leaving his car in the road and we have to stop as he opens door and comes out to have a good shout at us.

    His main points were:
    • he doesn't like cyclists
    • he doesn't like cyclists riding two abreast at any time within his field of view
    • he doesn't like cyclists reacting to his horn in any way other than getting out of his way
    • he doesn't like cyclists using any hand signals (although other guy felt that his 'finger' hand signal was ill-advised as the Jaguar drivers incessant use of horn showed his nature quite clearly).

I did try and calm him down as I felt he was likely to get worse.
Really odd incident as most of the time a punishment pass is enough for some car users to establish that they are 'superior".
I did not use my mobile as his manner was clearly threatening. We had to wait around five minutes to get calm enough again to carry on.

Car was a blue Jaguar XJ from a while back. One with curved back window with silver frame. Guy was wearing rugby top. Odd too as his numberplate and car are pretty personalised so could be tracked down easily.

Yes. Road was quiet so he could stop. If it had been busy he would have found someone else.

I was cycling alongside an eastbound tram (I was in the bus lane) along Princes Street this morning, mostly just to see how fast it was going on the on-street bit (just over 20mph) and to verify that they get a green wave (this one did, which probably made up for the three-minute red light outside the Waverley Centre waiting for it to emerge). When the road widens to three lanes at South Charlotte Street the taxi driver behind me was so frustrated that he roared into the left-turn lane to get round me then dived back to the right to get to Shandwick Place ahead of the tram.

Don't worry, wingpig, that'll all be sorted now that the polis are going to enforce the 20mph rule in town... ;o)

    Yesterday evening:

    1) Tailgated by an ASDA delivery van going up the hill from Haymarket. They stopped opposite the Dalry Co-op. I decided I couldn't be bothered with an arguement and didn't stop to speak to them.

    2) Beeped at and shouted at by a man in a car with bike racks on the roof and a child in the front seat.

    3) Nearly taken out by a taxi when I was turning right - admitedly I wasn't signalling (it is a bit tricky in my raincape) but I would have thought that cycling into the right turn lane bit would have made my intentions clear. I should have kept more of an eye on him, all the same, I was too busy being glad I was nearly at my destination.

What is it about rain that brings out the worst driving in people?

"What is it about rain that brings out the worst driving in people?" Misery? It seems that, even when cocooned in a dry vehicle, motorists instantly become in a rush to get out of the rain. Never made sense to me.

From last Friday: Joining the southern end of Greenhill Gardens from the Strathearn Pl triangle, I turn left onto Greenhill, only to find the pickup truck behind me passing me to make the left turn at exactly the same time alongside me as I'm going over the Give Way markings! He even has the tenacity to look across at me as he's doing it before cutting me up as we both head down into Pitsligo Road.

He was so close, I could make out... a Catlike cycle helmet through the back window! As Catlike are a mid-to-high price brand, it's a little more likely the driver or other adult family member is at least a reasonably keen cyclist, so you'd like to think the driver would be more responsible around bikes. Sadly not :-(

Yesterday: Indicating right to join the shared pavement at the Russell Rd/Sauchiebank junction a white Fiat 500 or similar squeezes between me and the parked cars on my left, all to avoid being held up for a mere 5 seconds while I wait for an approaching car to pass by. Way too close.

In addition to the selfish parkers I mentioned in the avoid Murrayfield/One Direction gig, I had a Mercedes taxivan ride into the ASL on red (only the rear wheels outside) at Western Corner. I shook my head, albeit with a smile, only to get abuse and for him to roll forward until he was at the front line. I asked him if that was supposed to be funny. He said that he had gone over the line before the light went red, which was a blatent lie and I pointed out that wasn't true. "Your word against mine", he said. I told him it was on camera. His comment suggested he was constipated, so I asked him how he thought the licensing board would think of his driving and attitude. Cue more abuse.
    Taxi licence 1256.

Then I had a close pass from another Mercedes and waved him to give more room. He then stopped in front of me and I called out that he passed too close. "Why are you going to wobble and fall over?" was his pathetic reply.I told him to move on and of course he gave all the empty parked cars far more room than he'd given me. What gives him the right to decide how much room is safe for me? Certainly not the little piece of paper and plastic he pays for.

    And on Monday...

I witnessed the tail-end of a coming together between a cyclist and a car at the same southern end of Greenhill Gardens/Strathearn Pl triangle, from my post above my last one. The rider was checking his back wheel/mudguard and the driver had pulled over round the corner. I heard her say that she had, "Changed her mind at the last second" so she'd obviously run into him due to inattentive driving. Fortunately they both seemed to be handling it amicably as I passed them. The driver of the transfer ambulance two in front of me stopped briefly to see if all was ok and we moved on. The car between it and me was a liability though, not indicating to turn onto Clifton Road, then stopping at the end of Pitsligo Road so far to the right that his right wheels were over the centreline. But no, he was turning left with no indication! Just as well I'd seen how bad his driving was so I was hanging back rather than coming alongside to turn left.

MAke sure you report the taxi to the taxi company if you remember which one it was - city or central are pretty responsive on the twitters. Report the guy to the cooncil as well.

After a bus driver overtook me, at speed, at a traffic island, I had a discussion with him at the next stop. He was unrepentant and suggested I complain as it would all be on camera. I did, and received this from Lothian Buses.

Thank you for your email regarding the driver standards displayed by the driver of the service 113 on Thursday 15 May 2014.

Firstly, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused by this incident.

I was concerned to read that the driver operated his vehicle in a dangerous manner and behaved in a manner that falls far below company standards. We take great pride in the professionalism displayed by our drivers. We take road safety and the comfort of our passengers very seriously and we have a full in house support team available to enable our drivers to achieve the highest standards. Furthermore, we have invested heavily in Driving Standards Training and we would expect our staff to drive to the high level that we require.

With this in mind, the CCTV footage from the vehicle’s registration plate was requested and subsequently viewed and disappointingly the incident can be seen taking place. I have passed on your complaint along with the CCTV footage and they will take the appropriate actions to ensure that the driver is not involved in a incident of this nature again. He will also be reminded of how he should be operating his vehicle and how he should be behaving when approached by customers or other passer bys.

Furthermore, you may or may not be aware that Lothian Buses has invested time and money on promoting cycle safety in Edinburgh by donating 500 Hi-viz vests through the Bike Station and our Streets Ahead partners under the banner of “See and be Seen” we also made a short information film “The Shadow Cyclist Vs Bus” which can be viewed on Youtube, this film was made initially as a training aid but generated so much interest it is now being used by various organisations across the country including Cycling Scotland.

Once again, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused and may I thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us regarding this serious incident.

    Yours sincerely

    Simon Singh

    And another one.

    Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to complain about the standard of driving by one of your vehicle drivers this morning.

I was cycling Brighton Place at about 08:45 this morning when one of your vehicles overtook me. The vehicle was very close indeed, and it gave me a fright. The vehicle was travelling very quickly and when it reached the lights at the junction with Portobello High Street, it went through a red light and turned right in an Easterly direction.

Today I was testing a rear facing camera and I will view the footage over the weekend, and hope that I can show you the overtaking incident, the number plate and hopefully a description of the driver.

    Regards
    Colin

    The response:-

    Dear Colin,
I am sorry it has been necessary for you to contact us regarding the driving behaviour of one of our operatives. I have identified the vehicle and the driver from our tracking system. I would be interested in seeing the footage from your camera as I would like to show this to our operative and use this footage for future “Tool Box” talks as Driver Behaviour is a subject we cover regularly.
I have discussed this incident with the operative, re issued our Drivers Policy to him and issued a verbal warning, he has no excuse for his behaviour and has asked me to apologise to you on his behalf.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of Castlerock Edinvar and the operative and to assure you this type of driving behaviour is not acceptable to Castlerock Edinvar.
    Kind Regards
    Lindsay

I sent them the footage too.

I'm glad that some responsible employers are taking these sort of things seriously now.

    Cheers
    Colin

Reassuring responses, Colin. I'm not sure there was any reason for them to add this bit though:Furthermore, you may or may not be aware that Lothian Buses has invested time and money on promoting cycle safety in Edinburgh by donating 500 Hi-viz vests through the Bike Station

I'd have thought making sure their drivers were aware of the need to look out for other road users would suffice... (or were you dressed in black against a black background on a black night?)

Cycling away from the King's Theatre towards the canal this morning, I was beeped at and then passed at speed by an old black BMW Y267 BPL (not 100% sure about the numbers but I think that's right) that felt that I was holding up his important business. Traffic was queuing in the other direction so he was unable to pass on the right(/wrong) side of the road as I suspect would have happened otherwise, while I was doing my best to keep away from the rougher bits towards the cycle lane and also position myself to pass the upcoming parked cars on my side. I had a sense that holding position would not be a great idea so let him pass me before I took the lane fully to pass the parked cars. Following him round the corner he then got held up at the red light at Viewforth and I probably could have caught him up, but I was turning right onto the canal in any case... Anyway, that is the first time I have been endangered but kept calm enough to make a mental note of the car.
