There is a part-time "when lights flash" zone by the school.

Ah, OK. I obviously never pass that way during school in/out times.

I drove along Gray's Loan this morning and witnessed bad driving from the taxicab driver behind me.

He was really, really close to me, I think possibly a bit frustrated that I was driving slightly below the limit.
He was also tapping away on his mobile phone, but it's OK because the mobile in question was attached to his windscreen and a good 10 or 15cm away from being directly in front of his face so I'm sure he could have seen most of the road during the short moments he actually was looking ahead.

    Response from Dalmeny Estate:

    "Dear ...

Thank you for your email & bringing this issue to my attention. As a result of receiving your email I am sending out a memo to staff. The farm manager is currently on holiday , but I will discuss your email with him on his return next week.

    Kind Regards

    Jonathan Burrow"

That's a start, but I'm hoping for a follow-up once the farm manager is back. I'd prefer to be hearing that the drivers in question received more than "a memo".

Incidentally, if anyone else has cause to contact the estate, Mr Burrows' email is

Yes, my apostrophe's in the wrong place ("Burrow's). Too late to edit!

Always worth complaining to the fleet manager:

Following on from our telephone conversation I informed you that I would investigate this matter fully when the vehicle and driver returned to base. I can conclude that our driver was indeed acting in what was an unnecessary aggressive manner. This and other issues have subsequently led to his departure from the company. Please accept my sincere apologies for this incident.

This was a coach driver that felt it better to sound his horn repeatedly whilst following us in the bus lane, rather than simply use the empty general traffic lane to overtake!

    Comedy driving from yesterday:

Coming through some roadworks with traffic lights yesterday at what is usually a mini roundabout. The first car in the line manages to go left between two cones and end up in a coned off dead end... cue much reving of the engine as they try to back out... I had to keep moving so I don't know what happened after that.

The person in the black SUV who pulled out from a cul-de-sac onto Gilmore Place this morning whilst I was already in primary on the approach to the King's Theatre in preparation for turning right. Caused me to swerve and brake. I couldn't tell whether they had seen me and/or whether they were planning on turning left at the King's and were going to hit me. They may find a reminder of the highway code sections 170 and 172 on their car tomorrow morning.

"Caused me to swerve and brake"

I read that as 'Caused me to swear and brake' (which lesser people would have done!)

"They may find a reminder of the highway code sections 170 and 172 on their car tomorrow morning."

Useful things cul-de-sacs for working out where people (probably) live.

I know someone who did exactly the same, though a personal note rather than an HC extract!

Red Volvo wardrobe on wheels last night on Bristo Place, half-passed me on the left and then slowly drifted into the cycle lane without indication. I gave the substantial rear wing a good couple of thumps, expecting some sort of response, but got absolutely nothing. he just cruised slowly across into another lane and went on his way.

It's not like I was towing a trailer with a big bright red box on it or anything obvious and highly visible like that.

In a way I was quite pleased yesterday, because I received my first ever punishment pass.

The bit of road east from the lights at Angle Park Terrace to Dundee Street past the WAR slip is, as we all know, surprisingly hard work.

Yesterday's rubbish driving was not from the polite VW driver behind me who held back and gave me plenty of room before overtaking once the road levelled out, but from the white van driver who was behind them, and who was clearly in a Great Hurry. I heard white van man blow his horn at the VW driver and I observed in my mirror how close he was to the car, presumably not aware of what was causing the brief hold-up.

When VW driver overtook I moved back into primary to protect myself against vehicles emerging from the two side roads ahead, but WVM didn't like that at all and tailgated me, then overtook just before the traffic lights, pulling sharply towards the kerb as he did so. Unfortunately for WVM, but fortunately for my velomobile's bodywork, I anticipated this and hit the brakes, so he overshot as he pulled in.

His rush was for naught, as I was still directly behind him when we reached Gilmore Park, up which I decided to escape.

Yup - Don't defecate where you masticate!

"I know someone who did exactly the same, though a personal note rather than an HC extract!"

I agree that a personal note is probably the way to go. Those rules everyone knows. They just probably don't appreciate the effect that their decision has on others.

I'm getting fed up with drivers performing unnecessary overtakes.

Whilst I'm not a super-fast cyclist, on a flat road I can be averaging comfortably 20-25mph and on a downhill about 25-30mph. Most of the time I find myself pacing cars quite easily.

The following video shows how impatient drivers are. The driver doesn't even consider waiting behind me!

Scarily, I just Googled the same registration - first hit is another video showing him passing a cyclist very closely!

    Clearly a bad driver.

@CJC that was my video. I confronted him and he clearly shows no understanding of traffic laws and thinks that all bikes should be riding in the gutter. He's an idiot and I think he does this sort of thing all the time.

My video below with the same van.

That's a pattern of behaviour the cops should be interested in...

While it's not always a surefire technique, going down Abbey Mount I would always be in as strong a primary position as possible. Among other things that way you're giving yourself the best sightline for any vehicles emerging under the railway bridge.

Scottish Water truck SH12 UWP, which was made to drive through a red at the west end of George Street, through the ped green and into the green-lit-moving traffic going south from Queen Street.

@CJC - I cycle that same bit of road every day and have similar experiences. Drivers always underestimate how much speed you pick up as you crest and hit the down hill section.

@Arellcat - yes, I normally take a more primary position there. I was planning on moving out but I could hear the van coming up fast behind me and didn't want to move out in case the driver wasn't paying attention.

@earthowned - Sadly yes. I've been beeped at when doing 30mph!

Sigh, heading down Clermiston Drive this afternoon, car comes down Clermiston Crescent, stops at the Give Way, then moves just as Iam almost at junction!!
Had hunch, escape route figured, swerve down Parkgrove Terrace and brake, would have liked to discuss further, but she drove off down to Q'Ferry Road, followed but gone. Waited at traffic lights to cross Q'ferry Road, lights change to red, I start to move, but car coming from town brakes then keeps going!! through red. Is it a full moon?

I often go through clerie on the way home. I'm sure there must be a bye law that allows cars not to give way to bikes around there. Practically 100% of these drivers don't apologise for it either regardless of how close they come to hitting you.

I grew up there so must admit to firing off even more abuse than I receive from these halfwits.

I've seen dozens of people parked on double yellow lines recently. Have the rules changed suddenly or something?

horribly dodgy overtake on way out of S.Queensferry yesterday. uphill onto a blind crest/corner. I had stupidly allowed myself to drift to the left of the white line as the road surface was less rough and I was riding pretty fast, and the offbeige landrover type thing took this as a sign that it was fine to pass with about 1/2 an inch to spare.

Head was down and hill climbing so I was a bit miffed when suddenly vision was full of side of car! Was so shocked that by the time it was past me I was still wobbling all over the place and didn't have time to give them a wee 2 finger salutation.

Some very close passes, some undertaking, some overtaking into the tram only area and a very dangerous overtake when turning right - http://youtu.be/N5H60oO-PLM

@tk: that's quite a selection of rubbish driving, all within the space of about 200 yards!

The Mini's overtake via the tramlines was pointless: they reached the red light queue about 3 seconds sooner than if they had waited behind you.

Nice use of the ASL by the scooter.

Also, I spotted that one of the cars giving the close pass through Holyrood had bike racks on the roof. You weren't exactly dawdling along there either - I don't think any of those cars were sticking to the 20mph limit.

Not on the bike for a change. Walking across the pedestrian crossing outside Waitrose in Morningside, lights went to flashing amber half way across. Dark blue Renault Clio PJ09 CZX floors it and drives straight for myself and my wife, then slams on brakes before hitting us. Totally aggressive stupid driving. Had L plates on the car, but solo driver. Reported to 101, after 10 minutes on hold.

Person in blue people carrier pulled out on me on my way through Currie. Much breaking and yelling from me, with a single "'KINHELL" to relieve my feelings once collision had been avoided. Did get a flash of the hazards as they drove off, which I took as an apology.

101 is terrible at the moment. I stood outside a police station for 30 minutes on the yellow phone to 101. They should have had an open counter and I was wanting to be let in for an arranged appointment as a witness to a serious incident on a cycle path. The police had warned me about possible delays as even they can't get through but the comment the other guy made while trying to sign on for his bail said it all. He told me that if the response outside the station was 30 minutes then why would you not go back to crime as the chance of being caught is so slim.

Use 999 for any 'crime in progress' or incident that's just happened.

(That's what a police officer told me)
