I bought the bike Second hand at Christmas from a friend and its always had a Reynolds 853 sticker on. Then when searching for others on Ebay I only found 531 for the 'plain' Galaxy doe to the decal. So I looked at 853 and found lots of new Ultra and Super Galaxy. Can anyone help me ID my model please? I'm thinking about its value for the insurance. I don't want to undervalue the bike.

    Cheers,

According to a bit of Googling, if you find the serial number, the last 2 digits should be the year the frame was made. That might help you work out if it's Super or Ultra.

I think from the Dawes website, they use the same frame, but the Ultra has a higher-spec drive train (Deore XT and Sugino cranks) than the Super (Deore LX).

Othere things that might help determine the age are if it has a straight top-tube or compact.

Cheers Kaputnik, I also found this 190569867640 on ebay, which is the frame I have. Other Dawes I've seen have the skinny diagonal tubes, and appear to be pre 2003. My model is very similar but has the older quil type stem.

Well after some interweb reading the late 90's were rubbish as their frame biulders all retired, and they had probs finding good alternatives. Then later on they appear to have used more and more Reynolds 531, so your right, ~2005 does appear to be a good vintage. Might not be so keen to sell now.
