Aw, diddums. Ickle driver lose his job if loses licence. Him only drive at nearly twice speed limit, no big deal huh?

    From the Dundee Courier:

'Sheriff agrees to impose £1,000 fine — but no ban — on 110mph A9 speeder
A salesman has escaped a driving ban after offering to pay a fine.

David Hutton, a sales manager with O2, had told Perth Sheriff Court he would lose his job if disqualified.

The 36-year-old had been spotted by police as he tore down the A9 south of Perth in a BMW 525 company car at 110mph.

Solicitor Euan Robertson said: ''Mr Hutton has described this as sheer stupidity and a moment of madness.

''There is a policy at O2 by which he would lose his employment if he were to be disqualified for any period of time, no matter that he is a valued member of staff.

''He had been given a BMW 5 series company car just two weeks prior to this incident, but has already disposed of this and now drives his wife's Vauxhall Corsa so that there is no repeat.''

The agent told Sheriff Robert McCreadie that his client was ''throwing himself on the mercy of the court'' in asking for him to take the ''unusual step'' of allowing him to retain his licence.

''He is in a very good job and is well paid and in a position to pay a significant fine,'' he said.

Hutton of Blackthorn grove, Menstrie, admitted driving at 110mph on the A9 Stirling to Perth road at Netherton on February 24.

Fining Hutton £1,000 and imposing six penalty points, Sheriff McCreadie said he was satisfied that the consequences of a ban would be ''too great''.'

So it's alright. He has a good job, earns a lot, so can buy his way out of trouble. The system works.

''He is in a very good job and is well paid and in a position to pay a significant fine,''

    £1,000 not that significant then.

Maybe I should switch from O2...

According to the Daily Record the driver had two previous motoring convictions. "Moment of madness" indeed! Mind you. Sheriff McCreadie has a notorious reputation for whimsicality, inconsistency and incompetence, it seems. Try googoling him...

For example, recently he banned a motorcyclist for 3 months plus a £400 fine for a similar speeding offence. It seems for an extra 600 he could have escaped without a ban!

    that was my thinking
plenty out there would happily take a £1k hit over a ban
easily recouped in insurance premiums in the next few years

    Bump 2.

The reason is, our local police are holding community liaison sessions in the primary school to hear what the public's concerns are. Apparently lots of folk don't like walking into police stations to speak their minds...

I'm minded to report my concerns over speeding and aggressive driving. No doubt in some areas of the city folk will be banging on about 'dangerous' cyclists (viz the Cramond Brig lady who phoned into Radio McScotland this morning to complain about 'speeding' cyclists).

I missed this first time round - love this, it was the car's fault!

Cramond Brig Lady - have we not had some actual interaction with her? By we I mean The Forum We? Does she not have some kind of trip wire set up to take down cyclists who tear down the path at breakneck speeds? Or created her own speed bumps/craters to take them out [I may have misremembered this]

Of course we should guard against wanting our cake and eating it. Driver is wrong at 110 mph. Maybe Cramond Brig Lady is right that cyclists go too fast?
