I saw a L&B police 4x4* over at Meadow Place, with two police in it. Then, when I got to the meeting of MMW with NMW, there was another one parked there (or it had somehow got there before me). Anyone else spot them? or have any idea what they were up to?

*by 4x4 I mean like a rangerovery thing - is there a better name? not quite what i would call a people carrier/suv

Yeah - I saw these too (about 8.45). Think they were actual Range Rovers. Did strike me as a bit odd.

Did they aim speed cameras at you? (reminds me of the thread about police outside Murray Field stopping cyclist for a similar reason).

Yes, that's what I was wondering too. I wasn't going particularly speedy (at least not on MMW) and didn't see anything obviously measuring me. If I see them again, I'll stop and ask what's up.

SRD - As far as I am aware, police speed detection equipment is only authorised for use on motor vehicles (Section 20, Road Traffic Offeders Act 1988 and various statutory instruments). I imagine these devices can tell the speed of cyclists, but it is a moot point whether the police could rely on this evidence in court.

I saw them too. I wondered if it was something to do with overseeing the convoy of motor vehicles that was moving very slowly along the cycle lane and blocking it. (Park keepers or the like; they were being overtaken by bicycles!)

Morningsider - I doubt I would need to worry about being accused of speed myself :) Given that they were sitting in the car, not sure how they would stop anyone anyway.

But wondered if they were data collecting - have there been complaints, is this preparatory to some sort of policy change/enforcement attempt etc

I recall the Police used to haunt the meadows when Hele ambulances were due to arrive. Perhaps they just missed the doughnut stop?

Wonder if it's connected to there being lots of rangeroverythings and volvothings hanging around Duddingston Road West a week or two back, nearish to the Innocent? If the polices were datagathering, would they use obvious uniformed/vehicled officers or innocuous civilians in innocuous civilian attire?
