My (somewhat aged) Abus D lock is showing signs of wear and tear. In particular, the inside bit with the lock in it has started spinning around and around like a spindle. Is this a sign that I should stop using it immediately or risk it dying completely? Or just an annoyance?

As much as anything else you don't want to lock the bike up somewhere, then find yourself unable to unlock it again! Personally I'd look into a new one...

Sounds pretty bad, I would stop using it in case it jams. You could try asking a locksmith for an opinion, the guys on Bread Street (Mclaren?) are pretty good.
