I almost posted the ENews story about a recent mugging.

But now there's a petition that I think people here might like to sign.

Petition site is blocked from here, will try to remember to look at this tonight.

Not much of a fan of CCTV in general, but seems like a good idea here.

    Meanwhile in Sighthill

"PLANS to provide a new crossing to allow Sighthill residents avoid a notorious crime-ridden underpass have been scuppered."

At least "Alternative (High Octane) Fuel Head" (only comment at time of writing) is happy.

There was an underpass near our hotel in Ottawa which had piped Country & Western playing. Maybe it's what the Canadian's like in the underpasses, but I assumed it was a way of keeping it clear of Ne'erdowells.

Country AND Western? They have both kinds? (name the movie)
I would run full speed if they had that here - Country on one side of the tunnel and Western on the other (western) side...

Perhaps The Archers on a perpetually looped tape continuous audio stream might keep the place clear.

Splitters? Are we back onto Life of Brian?

It's 106 miles to Jerusalem, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing loinclothes.

    Ledo is.

Back on topic (I know, how boring), if CCTV is installed it is because it meets part of an overall crime prevention strategy and is targetted. The days of just sticking a camera on a pole are long gone in Scotland. Local authorities cant afford to support new cameras and there is not much funding around, so they are using a toolkit developed along with the police as part of a community safety strategy. More on the scotland.gov.uk web site hereif your are interested (disclosure; I'm on the national steering group).

    7 months later...

I went through the subway after 4pm today and workmen were installing a 360 degree camera at the top of the steps. They had finished and tidied up on my return about a hour later. I didn't notice a camera at the other end (though I was entering/exiting via the playground so maybe missed it) and doubt the camera would see to the other end of the tunnel due to the angle and distance combination.

Five new CCTV cameras have been installed in the Telfer underpass in the Dalry area of Edinburgh in a bid to improve public safety.

And hopefully to reduce vandalism (grafitti).

The anti-graffiti paint works really well, but only if it is kept clean. It doesn't stop them painting on the walls, just means it comes off at the first attempt. When it was first repainted it was regularly washed but they don't seem to bother any more so the graffiti lasts a long time.

A pity the cameras don't stop the annoying BMXers/skaters/skateboarders (whoever it is) who keep putting that huge slap of wood at the bottom of the slope halfway down the ramp which bypasses the steps. I had to get off today and drag it off the ramp to get past.

@Focus yes I've twice had to do that. Don't forget it could also be overgrown microscooterists also.
