" A lengthy section of average speed cameras has already been in place for some time on the Fife side of the bridge, prompting complaints from drivers of frustration at driving 30mph below the usual limit straight after the often challenging task of making it across the bridge."

What exactly is "challenging" about making it across the bridge by car???

Too many other people doing the same thing which is why we need to spend £1,000,000,000,000,000 on a new bridge.

Is it really 70mph once you get the other other side?

@Min, it certainly is, or was, apparently.

Good news about the average speed cameras, should improve the traffic flow noticeably (and wind up "alternative petrolhead" on EEN. win, win :-))

I see the usual suspects are bleating in the chip wrapper comments about the cameras being unnecessary, cash generators, police state even!

Perhaps they can install average speed cameras on arterial roads around Edinburgh? Pretty sure most motorists break the speed limits when they can get away with it, especially after dark.

Safety for workers on the billion + pounds white elephant. Nice. Can we have some safety for other road users in town too?

Whilst I do think that the 40 limit starts far too early on either side of the works. I am totally in favour of the average speed cameras, and keep them there when they are done! Far too many clowns fly along that section of road.

    ?When it becomes motorway?

Have to agree with steveo, what on earth is 'challenging' about crossing the bridge???

I constantly get passed at this bit of road as virtually the only person sticking to the 40 limit.

    "?When it becomes motorway?"

I'm normally on the train. No motorways on the train track.

@Anth, I had the same problem on the M90 works at Newbridge until I came through this morning with the average speed cameras in place.
Nice steady traffic flow, all doing the same speed, loverly B-)

In my experience they are very successful at modifying driver behaviour, so hopefully we are likely to see more of them around the place...

Ah. North side of the bridge the 50mph limit from the bridge remains for about half a mile or so, then changes to 70. I also stay at 50 until the 70 sign and have people passing me. I think, basically, from Cramond Brig a whole load of people simply drive at a constant 60 no matter which limit applies...

And Smudge, exactly. Love average speed because you don't get that concertina caused by suddenly braking just-seen-the-speed-camera driving.

    Safety for workers

Exactly. I was thinking this myself. They usually only install average speed cameras around major engineering works - to protect workers under H&S in the workplace laws. It's a shame these same laws can't be applied to "other road users".

I drove south down the M90/A90/M9 at the weekend and was pleased to see that most drivers were obeying the 40mph speed limit north of the bridge. There also seemed to be more respect than usual for the 50mph on the bridge and further south, even without noticeable enforcement. But the 40mph further south didn't have cameras on it (then?) and wasn't as well obeyed. I've never felt a need to brake suddenly when I see a speed camera, but since some drivers do, maybe the cameras should be hidden?

"maybe the cameras should be hidden?"

    But that wouldn't be faaair...

Still find Ave speed cameras a bit creepy from a surveillance point of view, particularly their almost blanket coverage in Ayrshire.

Although it's been said that every traffic camera has licence reading tech to help time traffic flow.

" North side of the bridge the 50mph limit from the bridge remains for about half a mile or so, then changes to 70."

Okay that makes more sense. The article quote made it sound as if it is 70mph the instant you get off the bridge which didn't seem right.

Three cheers for the average speed cameras on the M9 spur at Newbridge that are part of the roadworks too. It was downright dangerous trying to keep to 50 at Newbridge then slow to 40 just as the "rules don't apply to me" brigade were getting wound up for the M9 proper. Problem solved!

"maybe the cameras should be hidden?"

But then they would have to work!

"..a bit creepy from a surveillance point of view.."

Agreed, but more annoying is the fact they only trap those with valid plates/VED/insurance.

Is winding up Alternative numpty head and his associates a valid sport? (cackles) :-))

I am still looking for some explanation as to why workers in a field next to the M9 can't work safely without a 40mph limit on the motorway yet primary school children in my area have been told that it is safe for them to walk to school alongside a 60mph road. Perhaps Transport Scotland should be more interested in real safety issues rather the safety of invisible workers.

#25,26,27 Nope the justification for average speed cameras and lower limits to reduce congestion has nothing to do with Prescott and nothing to do with politics, no-one is conducting a "war against the car" and no-one is trying to restrict your liberties (rolls eyes). Lower speeds, and especially average speed cameras reduce the incidence of overconfident people driving too fast then braking for slower traffic and setting up what one of you described as the "slinky effect". Ask a transport planner, it works, and no amount of bleating about your inconvenience will change that fact. "Incandescent", actually Car face does a pretty fair mockery of you pair, perhaps you ought to read some Burns and attempt to see yourselves as other see you? Bottom line is that there have been some legal limitations put in place for the safety of workers, and as an incidenta,l for the safety of everyone driving past the works, if you want to keep a license and avoid finespoints, then behave like a responsible adult and drive within the law. Oh and as to the "never will be workers in that area, I passed two on the hard shoulder earlier tonight near the derestriction signs, but hey, why let some mothers son's safety prevent you from getting home a couple of minutes earlier....

It's not just the safety of the workmen, the hard shoulder has been suspended too.

@crowriver, I thought I'd give it a go for a little while, Alt petrol head has had rather too long bleating unopposed ;-)

Average speed cameras are incredibly effective. To the extent that I can remember discussion when the Ayrshire cameras were introduced that they were not recovering enough of the cost of installing them. Only three people caught in the first few days, if I remember correctly.
