Wanted: mount for D Lock

I'm after a decent mount for my D Lock.

I don't want it mounted inside the main frame (that would be too easy and, anyway, my frame is too stupid and small for that to be practical.

I've got and am using one of these.

It has to be one of the worst cycling accessories I have ever bought. The metal parts are made out of cheese-aminium, the sleeves don't stay tight on the lock shackle for very long allowing the lock to rotate in the holder. It rattles, and it's just badly made.

But apart from all that it has let me mount the lock in a rather handy and out of the way place. Here it is in action:

I'd prefer a mount that could fit any lock (i.e. not requiring a modification/addition to the lock itself, like the one I have).

Perhaps there is a mount that goes on the handlebars, or the rear rack (without blocking panniers)?

I noticed somewhere else that wingpig had his lock mounted in a way that might work.

    See:

Although I also notice that he has a big person's bike with more space for that kind of thing.

wingpig, is it one of these?

I think I have one of these

I'll dig it out (the D Lock clamp), and bring it in on Friday. The lock was stolen along with my bike.

That linked item looks almost exactly like mine, which came with that Kryptonite shackle about eight years ago. I can just fit a 700ml bottle in the cage beneath. Over the years it's loosened to the point where the cam has no effect but the lock has so far not jumped out...

Abus do a three point arrangement for the side of racks:

It would mean that it definitely couldn't carry the lock when carrying a pannier on that side, but perhaps the mounts themselves could be positioned to not foul the pannier.

Didn't Topeak do a "double skin" rack where the d lock could be slide in below the top deck? Long discontinued I'm sure, but it did look useful.

I've gone for Twofish Lock Blockstwo fish lock blocks to hang my industrial lock inside the frame, but gave up when it came to the kids' locks. We simply lock them to the rack and accept the inevitable rattles...

    :-(

    Anymore of those floating about?

Chdot tried to help me attach the mounting thing that came with my new lock and it was (a) crap and (b) didn't fit anywhere on my bike either.

So I have to fit lock in pannier, which sometimes means carrying an entire extra pannier just for the lock...

@SRD - bungee the lock on the top of the rack?

I've been regularly popping to the Bike Station to rootle through the light-and-lock-bracket drawer (featuring classics such as Duracell Lockable Light brackets and the big hooky things into which those two-D-cell™ Ever Ready® lights clipped) to find a replacement/spare shackle-holder for carrying the same lock on otherbike, so far with no luck.

I'll measure my lock and get one of those mirror-image clamps if it smells like it would fit. A bit bigger wouldn't hurt as the lock really needs a bit of padding anyway to stop it rattling. Easier and less faffy than trying to do something clever with my spare pannier hooks or the unused bottle-cage mounting-point.

I do this on my folder and it works a treat.

DaveC "I'll dig it out (the D Lock clamp), and bring it in on Friday"

Cheers Dave, but don't bring it on my behalf as I won't be there sadly.

wingpig "I can just fit a 700ml bottle in the cage beneath."

Not sure I'll manage that on my frame, but I think I might get hold of one of these and experiment...

I sometimes bungee the lock to the rack too. What I'd quite like to try is mounting the lock vertically between the wheel and the rack. This would involve making something myself but not sure my fettling skills are up to it.
