  1. This is actually linked to cycling. Once the nice weather returns I've got some video plans, but they require me having access to a sound recording studio to 'cut some records' (also need some backing singers...).

Can make the recordings planned before making the videos for them to go on y'see, so everything is ready. Planning on creating things on a par with the 'Performance' video on YouTube (search for it, it's great...).

Have about 4 parodies already lined up. Oh, and come summer I'll be looking for music video extras and camerapeople.

You could try Verden in Portobello. I've only rehearsed there, but know some people who have recorded there and been very pleased with them. Dunno how they compare to others in Edinburgh, mind.

  4. Keep forgetting we have like proper musicians on here and everything. Though what I'm looking at is basically tarted-up karaoke (backing track to real song with new lyrics sung over).

Anth, there is one at jocks lodge, which I think is your neck of the woods? The adverts on the window suggest a tarted up karaoke !

Am quite happy to record this for you in my Joe Meek-style home studio if you get no better offers/it's too expensive etc etc...

Finally got round to checking out the Performance video. It's awesomesauce, and I say that as someone who rides a steel frame from 1988.

Verden's ok I practice there regularly. Did some recording there with Rat Scabies recently with ok results. My mates have recently taken over the old Shore sounds in tennant street ( now called Arcadia.

A recording studio won't be cheap mind!!!! Do you use a mac Anth?? If so you should get to grips with garageband. It's a very user friendly multitrack recording program. I can use it ( and I'm a drummer!!!)

I love that clip. He completely destroys that bass drum and Townsend's ear drum. That beautiful pictures of lily kit that premier made especially for him.... suppose it did have Keith moon patent british exploding drummer written on the side of the floor toms...

Spaking of the unexpected on music programmes, here's Can on TOTP: http://youtu.be/E0nfjguTclg

@recombodna - I think anth is off the single speeds for now iirc.

It would be much cheaper to do it on your home Mac or PC. Mac is easier, as recombodna says, use Garageband. If you have a PC there's a great suite of recording tools for free from Dyne:bolic which is a bootable CD version of Linux with sound editing tools and more. Not as user-friendly as a Mac though...

Rat Scabies, eh? I saw the Damned live in the 1980s: Captain Sensible had already left and they were a pale shadow of themselves (appropriately enough)...

Aw, it misses off the Noel Edmonds introduction - he calls them Tin or something equally hilarious.

Same song but with added cycling (I must take the blame for this I'm afraid):

For the record, to those that sniff "in his day" or "bit too old for you" in my direction - I quite like Can :) but the guitar parts are verging on too psychedelic / progressive for my tastes. Much prefer the cleaner, simpler sounds the like of Neu! German motorik rock is great for cycling to if you want to keep a steady cadence up!

Someone's done some pretty good video compilations for Can songs on Youtube (that I can no longer find). The Mother Sky one is particularly good.

Blimey. Until just now I didn't know anyone else who listened to Neu!

@arrelcat yes there's one or 2 of us out there. We saw Michael Roether at the Picture House when he did the Hallogallo tour 2 years back. It was most agreeable.

I once saw Tangerine Dream; as the NME put it: "three simple musicians plying their trade in the semi-dark". They were a bit boring. What's a good Neu! album to start with?

    @Jackson Priest Nice one.

@kaputnik Saw Delight came out when I was in my teens and I can't say I was impressed. I liked Hunters and Collectors and Old Mother Upduff but I filed them under seriously weird. I had another listen when I read people saying how great the earlier stuff is. Future Days is one of my favourite albums.

I may defer to those with greater familiarity, but I believe that's a somewhat circular question. Doesn't one start with Neu! and then explore Neu! 2?

@Tom, the eponymous 'Neu!' (1972) is a gem of an album. Good place to start.

@ Arellcat I started with Neu! 2. I think because someone at the time told me that was the best one. I think it's fantastic but for some reason never got round to getting any of the others.

@Tom/Kaputnik: early Can is most definitely worth checking out, before they started getting more 'musicianly' (think they were all classically trained musicians slumming it mind) and yes, probably a bit progressive. Avoid anything after Flowmotion - in fact avoid Flowmotion also. Monster Movie, Can Soundtracks and Delay 1968 (comp of unreleased stuff) all great. 20 min long You Doo Right prob my favourite track ever. Will do compilation tape for christmas meet-up if you like???

We did a night in London once called 'Floor Clearers'. Played Cassetto off Neu! 2 / Funkadelic's Eulogy And Light / Metal Machine Music Part 3 / Sometimes It Snows In April - that kind of thing. The concept failed though, cos some people danced. Always quite fancied rolling it out in Edinburgh, it's sure to be a success.

Neu! Is a world of awesome. Anth, there's a recording studio just down the street from me, called 'Great junction street studios, gjss' lots of crap looking indie bands seem to be always emerging from it, so it can't be too expensive.

Gosh, NEU! is awesome. In places it sounds like the ambient soundtrack to Half-Life 2. Or rather the soundtrack to Half-Life 2 sounds like NEU!

Any more recommendations along similar lines?
