Nice to see lots of you. Nice to see lots of everybody in fact. Good turnout.

"P.S. look out for an "ON YER BIKE" spelled out with small red "warning sign" placard photo. You may or may not recognise most of the protagonists."
I'll bet you anything after all that they don't use it! :-P

A good turnout indeed. (You missed the unicyclist.)
Heading back to the office, the bottleneck at the top of Waverley Steps and the subsequent chicane over the the tramlines at Waverley Bridge was "interesting". Logically when heading west you want to be in the right hand lane, given the bus stop next to Jenners is usuaully full of double deckers; however, that places you firmly on the tramlines. I avoided those, but by chance found a lovely groove along the edge of the reinforced surface that my slightly soft front tyre chose to drop into and follow. Not ideal.

Bouncy bouncer MTB bloke hared off up North Bridge. Low MTB gearing though, so he was spinning like an epileptic washing machine as I eased by and just made the lights.

Kaputnik: "He didn't answer the "and how did you get here" heckle. He did turn up I suppose. Better than nothing? Or just taking the photo op?"
I saw him answer that heckle - he said he'd come by train.
Sorry I couldn't hang about - I've still to walk the dog. And apologies if I lapsed into my usual pointing at you and saying your name. I need to make it to Peter's Yard to meet people properly.

Aye, but he didn't answer my heckle. After he'd given his stock response of "difficult decisions, Westminster capital cuts, you folk have no idea how tough my job is," etc. I waited for a pause and shouted "Why don't you cancel the Aberdeen Bypass then? Then you'd have enough money!". Some laughter from nearby protesters and journalists. No response from the Minister.

Come to think of it I may have added later something like "Resign, ye useless numptie!" or words to that effect.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Oh, Friends Of The Earth estimate around 350 people turned up to the protest, which sounds about right, it was quite a big crowd.

"saw old, new bikes, orange bikes", check - proof I was there.

Would have been great if someone had got a pic of the two Xs rolling down the road together afterwards! Still, if the On Yer Bike shot makes the newspaper will have to tweet to Cotic about it!

Lots of familiar faces - Dave's partner was there too. Darren from Pedal Ready, Andy Hunter from Storybikes..... plus loads of CCE associates.
I was with Sally Hinchcliffe
Cycling EmbassyShe took a Paper Bike and managed to go round town on one gear (is a single).
We did a wee circuit down Abbeyhill round the Parlaiment and back up Dumbiedykes to Laid Back Bikes. She was amused by the Holyrood bike paths that don't connect.
She'll update her blog later with shameless plug for my bike loan. She had come up on train from Lockerbie but lives over 20 miles from station there - near Dumfries.
Also met Joe Dunckley another CE person and Photographer - did want them to meet the forum and CC but too rushed.
Day almost started with a minor disaster.... some 'fun-loving' kids in a car threw an egg that missed Sally and hit the shopfront. Think it was random event. She did ask if this was normal for the recumbent bike trade!

Edinburgh Reporter have an article up, headlining today's issue. Particularly good audio slideshow/video report which is worth a look.
If you look carefully you'll see me in profile, wearing a brown flat cap just behind Alison Johnstone's shoulder in one photo (I was chatting to my daughter). Also I'm delighted they picked out my wee placard (Slogan: Stop the cuts; Active travel is the future). Back of my daughter's helmet just visible in that shot. For avoidance of doubt, I had no idea they were snapping (except in a very general sense) and I don't know anyone from the Reporter either.
Might spot a few folk you know in there too?

I know man front right in ERC kit. Had his daughter on an over-the-bars kiddie seat, you can just see her lid poking out.

Hurrah! Yes! I'm the 'O' of 'ON'.
In fact I think CCE is 'ONYERB'

Poor coordination of "KE!" there. Wouldn't have happened if CCE was in charge.
I'm "N", nicely maintaining my anonymity.

Will be interesting to see (I don't have a telly) the news slot, hope it will be just mroe than an interview with Keef Broon.
I'm the R in YER

So - who was the bike shop owner that drove his van along?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Pronto Pedal Power were in attendance, keeping a low profile in the "workhorse" section..
Posted 12 years ago # -
Not that low - I've got a quick couple of snaps of you! Was going to have a word when chdot mentioned you were on the other side of the crowd - but had to get back to the office (the word being about citycycling.co.uk just to clarify).

Cool, just give me a shout when you have a spare moment. January's looking reasonably placid after the excesses of juggling a busy Christmas period with the birth of my wee daughter Beth.
Posted 12 years ago # -
@Druidh, was that Soul Cycles perchance? I've thought that before, often spot their van crawling about town...
Posted 12 years ago # -
Yay! Congrats!
Is it a Bullet you have? (haven't checked the pics back, only saw that you delivered for some place on Dundas Street which must be fun with the box up front...)
Posted 12 years ago # -
It's the Bullitt with a bespoke cargo box made up of sheet metal. Clunky but does the job, I'm currently looking at other options to ease the stress on my knees...
Posted 12 years ago # -
'Bullitt', think before typing Anth.
Rode one (briefly) in Copenhagen and fell in love with it. Takes a bit of getting used to the front wheel being so far away!
