Got an answer (from tie) to a previous post "What are bikes meant to do?" about the one-way closure of West Maitland Street.

"As you note in your message the actual work is actually in West Maitland Street and the obstruction is just to westbound traffic. Hence to get buses and general traffic through it is necessary to route them up Lothian Road along the West approach and back along the Morrison Link. Although not an immediate choice for cyclists they are not precluded from following this route as the traffic ban on cycles starts immediately to the west of the Morrison Link.

That said Cyclists can continue along through Shandwick Place and only divert more locally to get past the roadworks. Depending on the cyclist this may mean dismounting to use the footpath or using a parallel route to either the north or south.
    For Example:
To the north use Queensferry Street, Melville Street, Bishop's Walk (past the Cathedral) and Palmerston Place; or
To the South use Rutland St, Canning Street and Dewar Place to Morrison St.

Tie have attempted to work with the council to ensure that major works obstructions are appropriately advised, however it is not expected that cycle alternative routes be signposted as tram work signage is already considerable and there is a risk of creating additional confusion.

Tie will continue to work with Council to ensure that relevant information can be posted on their Cycle Page."

I didn't actually realise that bikes weren't banned between Canning Street and Morrison Link. DON'T FANCY IT!!

I've only cycled west on the West Approach Rd from Lothian Rd as far as the right turn into Canning St (which rarely detects cyclists anyway), and eastbound when I became lost in the car park under/next to the EICC and ended up on the WAR. I became a very fast cyclist for a few moments!

I don't think the Morrison St Link is meant to be used by cyclists; and the link at Morrison Circus is only designed for use by cyclists approaching from either the new path at the ends of Upper Grove Place and Brandfield Street, and the semi-convenient cut-through from Dalry Place (I think?); when I visited a few weeks ago, that new path wasn't open yet, and the access ramp switchbacks are a test of slow speed bike handling.

There's still the opportunity for CEC to develop a bike route parallel to the West Approach Rd to link the Telfer Subway with Morrison Circus. They could even route it to Canning St by narrowing the single eastbound vehicle lane and widening the bus lane, and pulling it down to 30mph. There's not much room for error with those rather solid stone walls, though.

Edit: Why is the WAR largely Cyclists Verboten! while others such as Glasgow Rd are ok?

"Why is the WAR largely Cyclists Verboten!"

Originally the road had a higher speed limit. It's not particularly wide.

Seem to remember when it was first built, they keep the bridge supports at Grove Street and realised that it wouldn't be 'safe' to expect traffic to get between them - it was easier for the trains, they stayed on the rails!

I've often thought it odd that there's a 30mph limit bus lane all that way, but it's banned. Our council are quite keen on banning things though (bypass, A90) which are routinely not banned elsewhere in the country.

Either the A30 or the A5 dual carriageways make the stretch of the A90 to the Dalmeny turn-off (the bit which has the rediculous "path") look like small cheese...

There's also the stupid way that you now ride up the A68 to find yourself about 2 minutes ride from the A1 (legal to ride on) but with that five hundred yard stretch that joins them banned.

The first "No Pedal Cycles" sign going Westbound on the WAR is at the entrance to/exit from the Sheraton, so the bit between Canning Street and the Morrison Link is verboten and TIE have it wrong.
