The Scottish Government has agreed to match a £50 million offer to safeguard and improve the cross-border sleeper train service.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said the Scottish commitment will surpass the total from the UK Government.

It comes during a consultation on the future of train services north of the border, including suggestions that funding for the sleeper could either be improved or withdrawn.

That's nice to hear. If the Scot Gov can suddenly find £50+ million like that for new sleeper rolling stock, then surely they can give the cycling funding back to Sustrans and boost the SAT budget?

They would have done, but that money has just gone on saving the sleeper services... ;)

The cuts to the SAT and Sustrans budgets are truly disappointing, and suggest a lack of principle by the Scottish government, but at least the sleeper service may mean an environmental gain over more people flying, which would be the alternative without a sleeper service.
