"Can't believe a pedal pusher won SPOTY. Who votes on these things? It barely qualifies as a sport"

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

@MarkCavendish congrats Cav! Just so you know, I'm now going to buy a bike!

You can tell how happy the BBC are about it not being a footballer or a golfer (or a runner ahead of the Olympics)... Their report of him winning still says that he won the final time trial of the Tour de France in Paris.
The BBC hates cycling just as much as any other media outlet (except the Grauniad).
Go Cav!
R4 quite funny this morning: 'we'd hoped to talk to him, but we gather the celebrations went on a bit long last night' :)
I'm in the 'celebrate his achievements, but not sure about him' camp.
What he's managed to do is astounding. To be only 14 stage wins in the Tour off the record is remarkable. And road race world champion, superb. But by turns he annoys me then entertains me. That said, always happy to see him win a stage.
I just look at someone like Cipollini, who had the same arrogance which I think is absolutely needed as a sprinter at the top level, but who had utter style to go with it. But then with Cav there's always the possibility he'll ride all the way to Paris (as he's done in the last couple).
Torment, thy name is Cav!
this is why I think Mo Farah should have won. such a great person/personality. we can celebrate Mo, not just his achievements
I think that Cav's public persona has matured in the last year or so.
"this is why I think Mo Farah should have won"
I think, if I'd voted, that's where my vote would have gone (with Cav a close second on the basis of his achievements).
Amir, it'll be interesting to see if the public persona matures even more with his move to SKY.
Well I thought his acceptance speech was very gracious, in that he emphasised this was recognition for cycling as a sport.
Mark Cavendish's persona may be difficult, even at times irritating (though personally I'm a fan). This is not an award for being personable, its for a personality. There's no denying he has heaps of that, whether we find him likeable or not is beside the point.
The whole idea of a personality contest is weird - like something from Miss World.
"... whether we find him likeable or not is beside the point"
John Terry has plenty personality - I'm not sure he'd be getting any votes just now... ;)
Well done Cav - cycling the winner by a long ride! I didn't vote but if i could have I would have voted to have Gary Lineker voted off, not just the show, but TV. I never watched the show in full and only turned in at half time in the footie - then full time to see victorious cycling. Both times I tuned in I heard Coldplay. It should have been a more bike type anthem of which there are many - coldpay twice in one show - bah.....
"The whole idea of a personality contest is weird - like something from Miss World."
Yeah, plus there is no way you could vote on the personality of someone you only know from what the media choose to print about them.
It's "sports personality" in the sense of a sporting person of prominence as opposed to the character of that person.
Yes, which is why Cav's actual personality as percieved by the general public doesn't enter into it.
Some more evidence of how outraged the BBC are about it:-
Nothing on the "England" page, perhaps the argument is that the Isle of Man doesn't count?
In fairness, it was on the front page yesterday evening.
Also plenty on the Sports news page, though (of course) overshadowed by f***ball.
Hmm, I can't help feeling they could have kept it up a bit longer! Now I will have to wait till next year to see if the winner stays up longer - assuming it isn't another cyclist.
Yeah, I'll bet Wiggins goes and wins the Tour now and spoils it for all of us... ;)
"It's absolutely a dream come true. I work hard for my sport, I work hard to achieve success but what makes this special is it's bestowed on me by the British public and that's what makes it an unbelievable honour," said Cavendish, who was fourth in the BBC awards in 2009 and seventh last year.
"It's humbling for me. This is the third year in the row I've been in the top 10.
"I see a lot of people out and about riding bikes and it always makes me smile every time I see a family or a child on a bike.
"It's incredible that people are embracing the sport that I love. It really is a beautiful sport if you get to know it, and people are appreciating what we do."
It should have been a more bike type anthem of which there are many
Maybe this one?
Or else possibly this, though a bit Teutonic for the BBC:
What does it mean that I was looking harder at those vintage bikes than the young ladies riding them?
Pretty sure that means everything's normal, right?
Anyone?
@Uberuce - I think the bikes were all brand new at the time of filming, so they may all be identical, or at least all the same age.
I see to recall from some "classic album" documentary or other, that Queen hadn't bought them, just borrowed them, however they did have to buy the saddles...
Yep, borrowed from Halfords of all places!
Unfortunately, this doesn't confirm the saddle purchases (contains nudity, natch):

Great to see the breaking news from Argentina, Cav's first race for his new team and his first win :-)
