Cars Greener than Buses?

  1. Just received an email with this link from my brother entitled 'Brilliant! So much for public transport!'. I'm betting that it will include an averaged calculation including under-subscribed rural routes that are also, by their nature, longer, and that within the city a bus still remains 'greener' than a car.

Oh, and the source was Auto Express, so not exactly terribly unbiased!

Yeah, I'm just about to hire a JCB so that I can take that article with a huge bucket load of salt.

I have to say this is a typical car addict response, to try and assuage any guilt by trying to find some tiny anomaly, wilfully misinterpret it, take it out of context, and present it as a triumphant proof that their choices are the right ones.

A bit like the Tea Party tactics in the US, or the Tories here...

"That’s despite Government advice on the Directgov website recommending motorists leave their cars at home and take the bus “to reduce the negative impacts of driving”.

Because the ONLY negative impact of driving is carbon dioxide isn't it? If you have your head shoved so far up your own exhaust pipe.

From the DirectGov site that Auto Express links to, a wee snippet on the wastefulness of cars:

On an average day on the British roads, each vehicle carries 1.6 people, with approximately 38 million empty seats.

I'm pretty sure that buses are still more efficient per passenger mile than cars are. Of course it skews the stats massively if you remove London. Imagine the Scottish stats if they removed Glasgow and Edinburgh!

The more people on a bus, the more efficient it becomes. The Government advises people to leave the car at home and use the bus as it makes the buses more efficient and frees up road space which improves traffic flow and helps reduce emissions from other vehicles that may otherwise have been caught in congestion. In effect, using the bus benefits everyone, including other motorists. What do the auto express guys think would happen to vehicle efficiency if every bus passenger who could drive chose to do so?

      • Buses can only handle so many passengers - Edinburgh ones are often full
      • Car drivers maybe think that buses (and every other vehicle) clutters the road up but as has been said - no buses = more cars = not enough car parking
      • Rail can only handle so much and relies on congestion charging to discourage too much use
      • Bike lanes/routes are designed for a small amount of traffic. Route to QMU is prime example of how to discourage too much bike use. Result has been more pressure on other modes.
