A WOMAN stopped by police with her six-year-old daughter in the car and a drunk Transit van driver who tried to hide in a loft were among those arrested in a festive alcohol crackdown.

Police across Scotland saw reports of drink-driving up by a quarter on last year in the final week of a four-week crackdown.

Drink-driving over the period was up 12% on last year while drug-driving was also up, by 44%.

Must be a slow news day, cites almost every "exciting" bust. Come to think of it, not that I watch much telly, but I cannot say I was aware of a don't drink/drive campaign this year approaching the festive time....perhaps if there was none this shows how effective such campaigns are.

Such campaigns are drowned out by the fact that driving is considered safe.

Drugged/drink driving is less safe but not enough to worry some people. (See SmartCar crash on other strand).

I saw that. The next "highlighted" safety aspect is daytime lights...all designed to make driving safer. Cars are more visible therefore other road users can get out of the way...lol. Not if they are driving continental stylee straight at you, like I said where are you to go? Must practice my bunny hops for that eventuality so that I can pavement cycle to avoid said car!!

I wonder if the movement activated spotlights are actually a deterrent, are there any published figures, not funded by the light manufacturers that is?. I would have thought it would be a boon for burglars, they can see where they are going!! All this light pollution is having an adverse effect on the birds, they don't seem to roost like they used to and I have heard birdsong very late on, like the middle of the night and this was not in summer!

  9. Form the comments - it's depressing that people not only think like this, but are willing to express this in a public forum:

"They never publish the figure as a percentage of motorists tested-less than 0.5% so that it looks good. This is a christmas bonus scheme for the police at a time of cuts."

"festive overkill. all the country pubs are closed now. was anyone actually injured? was old jock the shepherd in applecross followed by 3 squad cars while ten grannies were mugged in oban?"

"Am i missing something here? If the police "crack down" and breathalyse people "morning noon and night" as they threatened in the Highlands, is it not logical that they would catch more culprits? Particularly those who unwittingly drive with residual alcohol in the morning"

@anth, once again it's the attitude of "everyone does it sometimes, so what's the big deal?"

We've seen this countless times in relation to speeding, driving while on the mobile, etc. At least the police don't share this tolerant attitude towards drink driving any more.
