"POLICE say they are not prepared to enforce a new 40mph limit on the A495 between Llynclys and Porthywaen where speeds of up to 100mph have been recorded, because the average speed of motorists is ‘too high.’"

  2. Speed limits should be increased, everyone goes faster than them anyway

    versus

Red light jumping cyclists should be fined and have their bikes taken away - they all do it

Seriously, what is it about the car that even the police say they won't enforce the law because everyone breaks it? Can you imagine if during the riots that had been their reason for them going on so long - so many people are looting the shops so we're not prepared to enforce the burglary laws.

"so many people are looting the shops so we're not prepared to enforce the burglary laws."

    I thought that's what happened...

    BUT

Police then looked at CCTV etc.

Presume police would support speed cams and deal with the evidence??

    SPEED cameras will be placed
    across Edinburgh next week in
a bid to catch fast drivers.
    The mobile devices, which
can land motorists with a £60
fine and three points on their
    licence, will operate across the
north of the city and in parts of
    West Lothian.
    Cameras will also be placed
    on roads into Edinburgh from
    the Borders.
    The Lothian and Borders
    Safety Camera Partnership said,
as of Monday, the cameras will
    be positioned at West Granton
Road, the A70 in Balerno, the
A90 at Cramond and at Muir-
    house Parkway.
    In West Lothian, speed traps
will be placed at the A705 in
    east Whitburn, the A89 in
    Armadale and the A706 at
    Longridge.
They will also be in opera-
tion at the A899 Lizzie Bryce
    roundabout, the A71 Polbeth
and the A899 at Deer Park.

Nice of the chip wrapper to warn motorists where they need to slow down temporarily before flooring it in the camera free zone...

Not the paper's doing, this sort of thing is public knowledge:

    Edinburgh Camera Locations

    Mobile Camera Deployments

The cameras now also need to be suitably visible - hence the high viz paint job they got some years' ago.

I think it was part of a move to demonstrate that they were for safety, not for generating revenue by "catching people out".

    ---Edit---

    They also tweet:

Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership spokesperson, Victoria Edmond said:
“By tweeting we are offering those who currently access social media quick and up to date safety camera information. People should not be surprised that we are telling drivers where the cameras will be, as we want motorists to think about their driving and reduce their speed rather than detect them speeding. I would ask that all road users drive within the speed limit to help make the roads safer for all.
