Just recieved a beautiful brass Portland Design Works "King of Ding" bell for the singlespeedshopper project.
Can I just say, it sounds GLORIOUS!
You may ding the king on Friday, if you so wish.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Should fix my Sogreni bell and we can compare!
It's a DING-OFF!
Both look nice. Would either be mountable on an aheadset stem (or possibly via a funky stem cap modification)?
No real restate on my bars.
KOFD is for small diameter (up to 25.4mm) round bars only. Clamp well machined out a pretty substantial billet of aluminium so don't think it could be bodged in any way shape or form.
I think (it's on the other bike) that the similar one sold at Biketrax (possibly also EBC) has a two-piece clamp which could possibly be bodged onto a girthier tube such as a stem with some longer bolts...
If it's a ding off I'd like to bet that I have the biggest bell round these parts...
I can't remember who it was (Riffian perhaps) but I was told, on seeing the King of Ding, "Oh, I thought it would be bigger!"
The inuendo made me smile :)
That was me! Nice looking bell - irrespective of size.
Whilst I was sat astride Min's stead this afternoon I was admiring her bell. Both kaputnik and I has a wee shot of it.
Matron!
It used to have a love heart on it but I love my bike so much it has worn off.
Sorry Min I was trying to shoe horn!! in a few puns but failed miserably.
@Dave The type I have is confirmed to have a two-piece and therefore bodgeable clamp.
Looks like my dream exists, but is out of stock. Forum props to anyone who knows a VO dealer in the UK who has these in!
scroll down to 'Headset Bell-mount Spacer'.
Only £3.50! I can't afford not to have one now. :)
Couold drop Tokyo Fixed Gear a line. Not listed on the site, but you never know...
Try Velorution in London. They supply certain Vo things (and other such niceties).
One thing I've found with KOTD is that because the dinger is a little brass weight on a spring, whenever you hit a bump, it goes "ding". and if you are on a badly surfaced bit of road it goes "ding ding ding ding ding ding ding" all the way along.
My new way to entertain myself while commuting is to see just how little I can get the bell to ding, meaning I'm cutting the smoothest route home :)
My old bell would occasionally be actuated by roads, but unpredictably. Every now and then it would be unfortunately-timed so that it might have sounded like I was deliberately dinging someone on the pavement or a passing bicycle.
Kapps - not accidentally setting the bell off = smooth surface under wheel. Not having to ring the bell intentionally also indicates a smooth ride home, free from road rage etc.
Having a nice brass bell or equivalent could be like the Lochgelly Tawse. The best belters never had to use it.
Hmm. I tried to order the Electra brass dome bell from TBC but it's on indefinite back-order (no worries, I said).
But now FreshTripe have got in touch to say they're back in stock, and I can get my Velo Orange brass temple bell with headset mount if I strike now!
It's twice the price though... £15.50 instead of £7.65
What should I do?
I like the ding dong bell but it's too heavy.
Have you tried these bells? Is there an optimum sound to weight balance.
"What should I do?"
Toss a coin and see how disappointed you feel.
"Have you tried these bells? Is there an optimum sound to weight balance."
This is the difficult question. I've tried neither, so it's impossible to say which would be nicer. Possibly they've even come from the same far-eastern factory (for all I know!).
I am in the middle of a voluntary austerity drive so thought spending £15 on something that I've done without for the last 25 years is perhaps a bit of a fail... (not that I held back buying what I wanted for the rest of the bike).
Yep, that's the one. Plus £4 for the headset spacer (up 50p since it went out of stock, grr...) and postage brings it to £15.50
It does look rather nice, I must admit. Mounted on the steerer, I'd hope not to get road-surface-dinging because the striker will be perpendicular to the ground?
