I was wondering on the way in whether it would desirable or legal to have a blacklist (qualified?) of organisations whose drivers have been observed to drive badly around cyclists.

I know it would be a long one.

or, a list of organisations whose divers are helpful and considerate around cyclists (might be shorter...).

    BSAC?

More seriously, I've had good experiences with Lothian Buses, including a bus driver that didn't run me over, then stopped to see if I was OK, after I was "tramlined" by a poorly laid manhole cover.

I'm told this is happening quite a bit on the real tram lines too!

Rabbie's Trailburners (blacklist for aggressive driving and tailgating in the busline on St Johns / Corstorphine Road)
Grayline Tours (blacklist for always parking their coach facing wrong-way in the bus lane at Haymarket Terrace outside the (I think) Visit Scotland building)
Whatever the crane-hire company was whose lorry decided to try reverse T-bone and pull out infront of me as I came round Drumbrae roundabout last night, blocking roundabout and forcing emergency stop from me.

We had our driveway landscaped recently. Several tenders sought from local companies. Imagine my surprise when one candidate arrived in the very same van that had almost taken me out while veering-left-to-turn-right (aka 'question mark' manoeuvre) in a quite Barnton street, with no other traffic, barely a week before.

He offered the lowest quote, and still didn't get the job... ;-)

    Citylink buses!

I have had more near misses / bad passes by the 900 bus to Glasgow than any other vehicle. Other than that most of the traffic is fine, don't really get many incidents, don't really understand why I don't, and other people seem to get lots sometimes?

The infamous Speedfresh Exotics van? Is it still worthy of that epithet?

Fife Creamery received a stern letter from me once, and they sent a polite reply.

Saltire Hospitality received a very positive letter recently, but I've had no acknowledgement or thanks. :-/

Arellcat, as you probably know, speedfresh exotics runs fruit shops in marchmont.

But, should you have any more problems, I know where this van overnights - should you ever need to report to police ;-)

I think First Bus are getting a bit better on the 44 route. I was actually on a first bus no 44 at Epiphany (12th night/06.01.12). THe driver had a major outburst of extreme west coast ness (I was loving it as was one of the three other passengers). The driver was remarking on an atrocious piece of driving on George St where the person parking the car was so keen to get the parking space they hadn't seen the bus. Not just cyclists that don't get seen. He then expounded on the City of Edinburgh's lack of ability to manage large scale infrastructure projects. He mentioned he wasn't from these parts but that he had observed that whenever Edinburgh tried to do anything they made a right HOO HA. He was a trifle loud. Once he had realised that the passengers on board were now concerned that we were ALL GOING TO DIE. He started singing country and western songs to himself. All for £1.30

I'm sure everyone will be responsible for the legal implications of anything they add here...

I've had reason to 'marvel' at the driving of certain Marchmont based fruit deliverers.

BUT I believe there is more than one van, and presumably more than two drivers.

"...organisations whose drivers have been observed to drive badly around cyclists..."

    That covers me.

Time Hairdressing probably only has the one car anyway.

Chdot, indeed ! My post sounded rather 'crazed vigilante' !!

Apologies all, not what I meant.

It was simply in case it could not be traced to assist police (as previous searches found it registered in Bradford), however we all know where it is during the day anyway.

@Uberuce Im not sure that really applies, as we are just listing firms we have had bad experiences from, its for someone else to take those lists and infer what they like from them. Confirmation bias would be to take the statement 'I was nearly killed by a Firstbus' and use it to confirm the hypothesis that'all FirstBus are badly driven.' which of course it doesn't, but thats how it works.

All FirstBus are badly driven? No, the ones resting in the garage are fine.

"NWH Haulage tipper lorries (Neil Williams Haulage (I think))"

I'm not aware of having encountered this company's drivers in Edinburgh, but when Dr Ian Wilson was killed a few years ago it was a Neil Williams Haulage driver who drove over him.

The problem with this kind of information is that it doesn't really tell you whether to be extra prudent or not. Is the driver in jail? Out of jail but driving again? Did nothing wrong in the first place, the cyclist had crawled under the wheels of the truck looking for a place to sleep (just to give a broad spectrum of possibilities).

It might even be that killing someone in broad daylight has led to Neil Williams Haulage revising all their employment and training rules, so that now in 2011, if a Neil Williams Haulage truck pulls up alongside you at traffic lights, you should actually be less-than-averagely worried?

@Dave I used to live up by Ratho at the Bonnington End. NWH lorries seemed to operate out of Bonnington quarry and when empty used to thunder along the road at frightening speeds. I've encountered them heading along Corstorphine Road in town also.

NWH trucks have always terrified me since driving to from france with family as a youngster. Never encountered any on the roads since I took up cycling.

This post adds nothing to the debate.

I would however like to blacklist any provate hire cab driver who overtook me over the course of 6 months while commuting from Comely Bank to Corstorphine. Even at 10pm and with two lanes to use they seemed unable to give me enough room

All numpties who 'require' a 4x4 in town.

A walk round the quiet streets of the grange this morning spoiled by these prunes, over revving and astonishingly noisy tyre thump.

My wife did remind me that they will, of course, be paying a fortune in fuel, which improved my grumpiness.

Oh don't get me started about 4x4 drivers. No.1 son and I had to squeeze past a huge monster truck type wagon which had just dropped off kids at music class, then proceeded to try and navigate a very narrow street lined with parked cars. Of course it was beneath the fellow's dignity to stop and give way to a mere cyclist, he had to carry on (albeit slowly) even if it meant nearly brushing my right shoulder.

I suppose he was one of those "cyclists shouldn't be on my road" types.

Crowriver, I am in danger of going OT here, but they are really starting to annoy me too - I am a pretty confident cyclist, but I got the heeby jeebies yesterday when one of them roared past me at 40 +mph - one of those audi Q7 things - and yet again, it was on one of the south Edinburgh roads taken out of the proposed 20mph pilot.

What worries me (for when my son is old enough to be on road by himself) is that some of the drivers simply don't realise how big and wide they are - and drive as if they are in a mini or something.

....and its nothing other than keeping up with the joneses - if they wanted a load carrier, get an estate car / van - anything?
