Your desk heart rate...

54 (snap, PS). I've always had a lowish resting pulse, while my state of fitness has varied significantly over the years. A better measure of fitness is time taken to return to resting pulse after exercise. On that score, I might not be quite so <cough> athletic...

    "What's your blood pressure doing?"

Usually hovering between the high end of normal and the low end of high normal. Must check this weekend.

I had my blood pressure tested last week and I'd a diastolic of 80 which isn't that great.

  8. Didn't have the phone by the bed this morning - d'oh!

Going to check it now, having had a cup of tea before leaving the house. Then check it after I've had the coffee in the mug I took from home.

Here goes - now: no pulse

    Ah.

Using the heart rate monitor, I was 42bpm after some relaxed reclining last night. It got as low as 37bpm, but that was pretty much directly on waking, so doesn't really count. ;)

  10. Post-coffee I'm sitting at 72.

    diastolic of 80
is good from a 'generally healthy' point of view. Any lower, and standing rapidly becomes a risky activity. 120/80 is the fairly fit twenty-something, and the rule of thumb would suggest you are allowed to add your age to this to get a rough idea of normal. I always find this wildly overestimates most people.

(all from an ambulance point of view, rather than anything sports specific...)

Lunch officially was an hour ago, haven't quite got into my new cup of tea, and 62 bpm just now. OMG, I feel so unfit!

Must remember to check it first thing tomorrow morning.

Post coffee on a 30 sec reading I'm at 74. Hmm.

  14. Just done another and come out at 70. Hmmmm as well. Okay, so I know that safely in the middle of 'normal' (according to ym app) but I'd expected/hoped for less.

I just scored a 45bpm sitting at my desk with the iphone app and the Garmin doofer agrees. I need to get a more stressful job.

65 again. Although these aren't really the best way to measure resting heart rates, so your true resting heart is probably below normal. Make you feel better?

I used an Android app and got 51. But it did go up as high as 56 as it stabilised.

1 coffee (2 shots of espresso in it) about 930AM and a lady grey about 2PM. No sweeties this afternoon... ...yet

    Dead on 60 this time.

I might cheat and take it after waking up rather than a cycle in and a lunchtime run... just to get it under 60!

Of course, I'm guessing that running four hours ago will not still be having an appreciable effect...

How the heck to the apps work, is it just a stopwatch and you count or is it something snazzier.

I'm going to try to induce a coma tonight to get it under 10.

Its a sensor in the camera.

They use the inbuilt awesomeness that is android, a little rubs off on iPhone. They won't work on WiFone due to the will sapping nature of windows ;).

They apparently detect the colour change in your finger as the blood is pushed through. Pretty clever.

The iphone app works with your finger resting against the camera lens. The flash unit is lit and shines into your finger. The camera detects the changes in colour as the amount of blood in the capillaries changes.

Apparently it's the same method used by those big clothes peg things that are put on a patient's finger in hospital.

@instgraphy. Don't try inducing a coma, the Gov't might consider you avaliable for work.

Ah that must include a patch to stop MS sucking your life force out through the camera lens. ;)

Or maybe not... I can't find a guarantee that use of the software will not turn the user into a mindless zombie.
