    The replacement front derailleur off of el fleabay which is needing a bit of hot shim action (about 4mm worth, any suggestions as to a good material for shimming.

    Or do shop repair inventories carry such items as Fd-M412 Clamp Band Adapters For 28.6Mm

    TBC?

    I've previously got a replacement band clamp off the shelf courtesy Velo Ecosse.

    I've shimmed various things in using carefully cut sections of beer tin. If you cut as a spiral, you can get a long, constant section that is conveniently pre-coiled.

    I have the old Shimano band from my Alu-framed road bike that I had to replace when I moved the derailleur over to the steel frame, which has considerably narrower tubes. I'll measure it tonight as it may be correct width for your seat tube? It's sold for a Sora, but it looks pretty similar to the Alivio one;

    Ta, would have to go for the shimming option, as it's a combined one, rather than a switchable one. Gah. Tempted just to buy a new one from CRC, as in the long run it would be a lot less bother as it comes with adapter.

    This is why I shouldn't play with my bike. Maybe Mikael has a point.

    No, this is how you learn. Otherwise you'll never learn! The other option is that you may be able to buy a shim manufactured to the correct tolerances for your purpose. May be a more permanent fix.

    Is it 2mm on either side = 4mm, or 4mm all the way around (as in 8mm total)?

    I think it's 6mm total. The original item comes with purpose built converters http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=38440

    Surprisingly my 99p ebay model didn't :) The ever helpful TBC says they can order in, will see what I can rustle up at home before I put them to the bother though.

    I've an official Shimano band clamp adaptor-shim left over from my front mech replacement last year... I even know exactly where it is after my tools-and-hardware reorg the other week...

    oh oh oh :) Can I purchase/bribe/cajole for? Even if it's not shimmy enough, I'm sure I can shim the shim.

    I imagine it would take an aluminium-seat-tube-sized band down to steel-seatpost-sized-band size band. No-one else has laid a prior claim to it so it shall be made available to the claimant above. I'll tweet when I get home and can retrieve it.
