  1. For a start only 4 of them have mudguards... ;)

Hmmm, not available online. Mikael would approve, there's a Velorbis Scrap Deluxe in the list. Genesis Croix de Fer as well - but my fave is the Singular Peregrine.

How many conform to Franklin's recommendations? IIRC he suggests a road bike with drop bars to pass through narrow gaps and to get up to the higher speeds he considers safer for cyclists.

  3. Here are the ten (finally a moment to post properly...)

    1. Giant Halfway City 2

    Folder, 7 speed, 'guards, £549

    2. Carrera TdF Road Bike

Drop bar, 'sturdy', no 'guards, drops, £329.99

    3. Velorbis Scrap Deluxe

Sit up and beg, 'guards', style and panache, £875

    4. Foffa Prima

Custom built fixed or single, £500 (for custom?!?)

    5. Boardman Road Comp

The bike to work choice, carbon fork, no 'guards, drops, £799.99

    6. Dahon Speed 7

    Folder, 7 speed, 'guards, £399.99

    7. Cyclefit Guru Evolo

Made to measure, carbon, £poa (seriously?)

    8. Singular Peregrine

Looooooovely, 'guards, drops, £565 (shurely shome mishtake?)

    9. Specialized Allez Triple

For the more 'experienced' apparently, drops, no 'guards, £600

    10. Genesis Croix de Fer

Disk 'breaks' [sic], steel, no 'guards, drops, £1,099

Yes indeedy - £565 gets you a frameset...

    Journalism at its finest!

  5. Yip, I read it and thought... I'm sure that's about what a frame used to cost... It's a filler piece I guess - but advertised on their front page, which has to be good.

Cyclfit Guru - £2500 for frame and forks
Foffa bike not actually custom made.
Singular Peregrine - £565 for the frame only.

All nonsense of course - the ultimate commuter bike is the one that suits you, your commute and can be used any day of the year.

  7. "Foffa bike not actually custom made"

Had a quick look at the piece - my mistake, says 'bespoke' rather than 'custom made'.

"All nonsense of course - the ultimate commuter bike is the one that suits you, your commute and can be used any day of the year."

Precisely. I wonder how many people would be swayed by articles like this? Just comes across as an advertising piece!

The commuter bike that suits me would be cheaper than most of these.

Do any of them mention commuting with children?

  10. "Do any of them mention commuting with children?"

Not a one. But don't be silly SRD, no-one actually commutes with children....

    That'll be a "school-run" bike you're looking for, SRD. n+1 :)

There's globalization. My dad just sent me a link to the piece.

    what a waste of newsprint.

  15. "what a waste of newsprint"

I dunno, I'm generally happy to see any positive coverage of cycling in the media...

'child labour' - everyone contributes in their own way :)

(nitpick - drives me crazy the number of parents I see walking to school carrying their kids rucksacks - what does that teach them??)

And apparently "written" by the food correspondent. Perhaps why lights, racks, guards etc. all seem to have been largely left out of the equation.

Singular Peregrine is lovely though from a commuting pov you'd be as well with the Kaff, it doesn't really do anything extra for the £300 mark up. It is much prettier though.

    Parents are their servants.

If they allow themselves to be...

Well, the above comments accepted, if I had to choose from that lot, given what I already have available to me I'd go for the Dahon though I'd rather have a Brompton.

    Posted 12 years ago #
  21. I'd go for the Singular, but more because it's pretty and I've already got a commuter...

I nearly bought a 2nd hand Giant Halfway from C**h C**verters in Dunfermline. Alas I was pipped to the post by another buyer. Nice design, though if you buckle a wheel you have a problem.....also the rear rack is a bit odd.

On balance the Tchibo Alubike folder is fine for my commute: hub dynamo lights, hub gear/brake, takes fully laden panniers no bother at all. They still sell them in Germany, for just a bit less than a Dahon Speed 7.

    "what a waste of newsprint"

Because too often the national newspapers only nods to cycling are such utterly pointless and subjective "top 10" lists of "ooh! these looks nice" that aren't very far removed from an advertisment. They ignore the real isses and pay lip service in this manner.

Not as much of a waste of newsprint as, say, Stuff, or any other gadget magazine.

I found the CTC magazine from November last year which has three recommended commuter bikes:

The Islabikes Beinn 29 is their recommendation with the Trek Soho and Cannondale Badboy also worth considering.

These choices were based on cost. A reader survey suggested that people were prepared to spend an average of £589 on a commuter (also referred to interchangeably in the article as a hybrid/utility).
