  1. Crikey, mini pumps have improved a lot recently. They appear to have not only got smaller; but also pump tyres up better.

I have two teeny versions (both presta only, but I think that's probably still a mini pump drawback, it would take aaaaaaages to pump up a 26" tyre).

Blackburn Airstick SL (White): slightly fiddly to attach to the valve, and moves about a little once on (there's no locking mechanism) but seems to fill the tyre (700 x 25) pretty quickly, and resistance wasn't too bad up to about 80psi (will apparently go up to 130psi, but I was basically putting in enought to get home).

Specialized Air Tool: cracking little pump, used it this morning. Has a metal locking lever that is easy to use, and means the pump stays rock solid on the valve. Nice smooth action, probably pushing less air than the Blackburn, so took a little longer, but again not too much resistance up to about 80psi. Nice quality feel to the metal body.

I got a lezyne one recently (something like this), which is superb. Has a sturdy 6" length of 'hose' inside that screws onto the valve and the pump and gives a solid connection. Also means that as I contort into bizarre shapes to relieve my weedy arms, I don't snap the valve!

  3. Ah! Didn't realise you could still get pumps with wee hoses on!

Yes the Lezyne connector is much more impressive/flexible than 'traditional' ones

I've got a Topeak Road Mini Morph. It's got a short hose to prevent shearing of valves, works for schrader and presta, and folds out at base and top of handle to mimic (as far as possible) a track pump. I've only used it in anger once or twice - it took a fair bit of pumping (always going to be a feature of a mini pump), but it did get me back to a reasonable pressure (say c.90psi) within a minute or so.

    WANT DOESN'T GET!

Not sure if it counts as a mini pump, but I find the Topeak Turbo Morph is pretty good. It's like a mini track pump, complete with hose and pressure gauge. Allegedly can get up to 160psi, have never gone beyond 90 myself.

Still have a smaller mini pump, but find that the lack of a hose means that the tyre valve rocks back and forth too much as I struggle furiously to get to the right pressure!

  9. @wingpig - you're killing my dreams man...

Right, onto the suggestion of PS...

Other similar types are available, including one at only £19 (though which doesn't come in garish colours), which is also available at CRC, which is also doing cheap chains...

The gold one looks particularly bling.

I'd prefer one in a sort of rusty-brown colour so that rust-mites would think my chain already infested and leave it alone.
I already have a shiny new heavily-discounted SRAM chain awaiting installation (originally intended for use after all the slush and salt was cleared off the roads, so installation may be advanced in the absence of slush and salt) but I might get another to try that two-chains thing so that there's less time-pressure when removing the chain for proper cleansing...

Lezyne do "bling" well - I've got a micro floor drive (another mini track pump):

I've had cause to use it in anger and it worked, but it is so swish, I've never dared leave it attached to a bike!

I've got a revolution mini track pump, use it all the time, good for high pressure and a decent stroke volume.

I've also got a titchy race pump, the least said about which the better!

Anth, are you wanting to do a mini-pump test before you buy? Can lend you my mini morph if you fancy. As crowriver says, there are some in the range that have pressure gauges too. Not sure if they feature on the mini-est though...

  16. Sensible head on says that I've now got two good mini pumps and so shouldn't be considering another. But would be good to have a gander and see what others are like...

I've a Specialized Air Tool as well. I've seen it used to put 110 psi into one of my tyres. The best I could manage was about 90 psi.

Clearly shouldn't have contributed to two p*ncture related threads in one day... Oh well, at least I manged to limp to the train and therefore patched in the warm!

Another 'in the field' recommendation for Lezyne
