Good thing too. Something needs to be done, as currently it is just a mess. I am sure that Sir David Murray is in favour, he lives there, it would mean his property would increase in value, win/win for him. I wonder if he will be putting his hand in his pocket towards the improvements. I think that the centre of Edinburgh is not pedestrian friendly at all, so much so that I prefer to cycle around than walk, so any improvement for them is better. The NIMBY's (lawyers) in Randolphe Cres/Ainslie Pl. have already started moaning, so how about open Glenfinlas Street off Charlotte Square down to St Colme Street/Queen St, like it used to be, if there is to be traffic. Getting rid of the parking is all good, perhaps discourage people from driving into town if they have nowhere to park

Discussed a couple of months ago, too:

Don't know what the west New Town set have against cars. They seem to like driving their own ones quite a lot. Maybe it's just other people's cars they don't like.

Sums up the attitude of many drivers, hence the behaviour on the roads.

Shame they're not proposing to allow access to the gardens. If they're wanting to regenerate the square and make it more pedestrain-friendly, it seems a no-brainer to do that. You just have to look at how St Andrew Square has been opened up following the development there. It's not like the Charlotte Square gardens are used for anything else for 11 months of the year...

  7. Exactly. St Andrew Square is actually a really nice space now. Useable. Friendly. A bit of an asset. Charlotte Square is the stand-offish prim sibling.

It seems like a good opportunity for an off-road cycle lane on each side of the road. There is room for this AND for making the pavement much bigger.
