cool ! am doing the 4 day in clackmanan next month !

Nice one. Are you paying for thé 4 day course yourself?
Posted 12 years ago # -
@splitshift, excuse the ignorance, is the four day one a course from ab initio or a continuation of training you've already done?
Posted 12 years ago # -
There have been a lot of children on/with bikes in evidence at Abbeyhill Primary in the past few weeks: methinks there must be cycle training going on.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Ahhh, so that's what was going on. I'll guess the red fixie with the EFG decal was yours?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Yeah that's my bike. She's a bute

@crowriver - it's also the Big Pedal, a competition between schools to see how can log the most cyclists (including parents).
Edinburgh >150 pupil primary league
Liberton is fairly far down the league, but the number of bikes appearing has filled the meager racks and increased from a low of 3 last month...

Ah, that must be it. I was surprised to see so many bikes right enough. Rarer than hen's teeth normally.
Shows what latent potential there is!

4 day course is the starter, supposedly gets us all we need to become expert cycle trainers ! its costing us nothing, or better be cause we havnt got anything ! To be honest it came to us, ie was recomended we apply, by a local schools educatin outdoors type person, who got our details from, in a round about way, Amy Hickman , at bike club !I have mailed them several times to confirm costs and other probs with the cycle scotland web site, it keeps asking me to log on even though i seem to need to do it on every page ! The free bit is a bit worrying, will prob have to revert to phoning someone and see whats what ! Its 26thapril, clackmanan, details on cycling scotland web page, courses avail, etc

I really should get round to doing this. No excuse, given I'm a kiddiewrangler who likes bikes.
Posted 12 years ago # -
last i checked spaces still avail on that dates !
go on go on go on !Posted 12 years ago # -
Well I put my name down, followed up with Cycle Scotland and was told I was one of 14 from my region who volunteered. I note I was also told CS don't provide the training, instead thats done by my local council. Well guess who is still waiting to be contacted.

@splitshift sounds like you're doing the same thing I did but over 4 days? There is a full on 4 day course that seems to cost around £600 in which you become pistol carrying cycle sherriff although I can't find the link to it any more... they seem to have changed the site since yesterday....... @Dave The training is carried out by your Active Schools co-ordinator
We need volunteers at Bruntsfield but I suppose if yer kids don't go there then why would you volunteer there. South morningside have 10 parent volunteers but I was the only one from Bruntsfield
It's hard to get people to be able to commit to 2 hour a week f they have jobs. I'm self employed so it's not a problem for me. Also for a lot of the parents a Bike is an alien concept..... or so it seems. The parent council have a budget to pay after school clubs. I have been paid in the past for drum tuition but alas cycling doesn't fall into this category..

Registered interest in the Clackmannan course, I have to say the website is far from easy to use when looking for the course info!
Have had the automated replies for my registration/interest in course, I guess I just wait out now... :-sPosted 12 years ago # -
yes I waited a wee bit then clunk, was confirmed !
Posted 12 years ago # -
mmmmm. £600 so that I can volunteer ! Web site contacts all out of commision at weekend(midday friday on) it seems . All enthuisiastics encouraging me to enroll/register never mentioned that, lots of well I think its free........
£600 so i can volunteer ! I think not ! jury deffo out on this.Morra will determine I think !Posted 12 years ago # -
It seems that's the deal to become a national standard instructor. The course I did was free. Only qualifies me to assist an instructor though. Here's the link was talking about http://www.dft.gov.uk/bikeability/delivering-bikeability/becoming-a-cycle-instructor/
Posted 12 years ago # -
yes was discussed, about being able to train assistants, seemed a good idea, get our youngsters involved, get the over 16s to become qualified assistants ! No mention of any costs anywhere on the web site !
Posted 12 years ago # -
Could be that it's free for you then? If so Great eh? I was gonna look into doing that course. I wouldn't pay £600 though!!!
Posted 12 years ago # -
Yup no mention of costs anywhere on the site or in the register interest sections. I'm willing to provide (a bit of) time and effort but cannot afford/justify £600 to help the Govt tick a box whilst saving cash(!)
Am awaiting confirmation/information with interest!@Splitshift, do you have an email contact who can confirm the detail?

By contrast

Still nothing heard, and I'll be running out of time to book leave at this rate :-(
Posted 12 years ago # -
@smudge, I have had no response for any of my 3 direct e mails,to the site contact box, or the two people i had addresses for. All attempts at contact by phone were met by answering machine that put me on hold, for ever. Will try again tomorrow, but if i dont get word, or at least an aknowledgement , am out ! of course being able to do that may bring its own problems !
scott,
pm sent also !Posted 12 years ago # -
Not impressive for an organisation asking people to give up their time and skills for free! Hopefully the Helix bods will be more realistic...

Finally got the right email and a very helpful gent at cyclingscotland has answered my queries one to one. I've pointed him to this site so he may (I hope!) make himself known here sometime soon.
Looking forward to the course now... :-)Posted 12 years ago # -
There's a Bikeability training course being run at St. John's Primary in Portobello this Friday and next (2nd/9th), 1.15 - 5:00 on both days.
It's free, though you may have to make some commitment to teach BA at your local school. Not exactly sure.
They're short on numbers and looking for folks to have enough to run the course.
