Riding along strathhearn c. 9.25 this morning, 2 cars in front of me. Light at Marchmont Rd has gone red. As I pull up, I realise car in ASZ is a Lothian & Borders police car. Sitting entirely within ASZ. I squeeze through (cars parked on cycle lane), and look in the window and say 'excuse me, what happened to the ASZ enforcement campaign you're running this month?' Officer in passenger seat looks puzzled. I point and sa y 'that's a stop line back there'. Pedestrian laughs. Light is changing. I cycle off. Now I wish I had stopped to talk.

The Police are just as bad as any other type of driver at driving into ASLs.

SRD fought the law. Law came second.

Lots of council vans still doing the ASL thing, I'm doubting they've had any instruction from their employer. Should be unnecessary, but.

    Another classic from this week:

Driving Instructor and Test sitter are doing their post-test clipboard round up parked at Bristo Place on the double yellows opposite side from Forest Cafe. They've not even bothered with the hazard exempts.

Tap on the window from Bax -- "Excuse me, you're parked illegally here"

Both stare, open mouthed and gormless.

There's no hope really, is there ?

SRD, imagine if you'd had a helmet cam - that would have been a cracker!

  6. SRD - I'm very grateful you've also e-mailed me about this. Part of the reason we are promoting 'Road Safety Plus' in our manifesto is so that we can get volunteers (perhaps like yourself) to report these offences and help us improve road safety. The Police understand there is a need to make their drivers more aware of the laws as well so if you've got the registration details I'd be happy to pass them on. If not Ill still raise it with them as they should have a good idea who was driving in that area at that time.

One final point, it would also be helpful if you could clarify whether the lights were red when the Police drew up or whether they were waiting to get across the junction and were caught in the box when the lights changed.

I'm pretty sure that the light was red already, I had been watching it, and the sequence, but I was a bit behind the police car, and the other car behind it. If I had thought the police had pulled in on amber, I would not have spoken to them.

Gordon, Thanks for picking this up and giving us some feedback. It would be helpfull if you know the Operation Name of this enforcement as if caught in the future, when we're faced with a gormless looking pc we can reply, what happened to Operation Soandso' which hopefully would prick their memories about the operation to enforce ASLs etc..

Similarly, I had a driving instructor tailgating me as I was driving at 20 in the 20 zone this weekend. He zoomed up behind me and then seemed confused at my speed. There is no hope if they cant obey signs

@msj, if you took a note of the registration you could always report it. Presumably driving instructors have sort of professional association? Or is it all a bit of a free-for-all, like martial arts or yoga classes?
