Forecast (at the moment!) is for light rain in the morning, fairing up for the afternoon. 17mph NE winds all day, with added 30mph gusts later.

    "Forecast (at the moment!)"

I get the impression that forecast - even a day ahead - has got less reliable this year.

I'm intrigued but dunno if I could manage 50 miles....

The shiny thing is that on this ride you are by definition pretty close to home at all times, so you can set out knowing that you're not going to be stranded miles from home as dusk falls, surrounded by ebon woods of menacing silence, the only light being the moon glinting from merciless hungry eyes.

Surely for a ride such as this (>10 miles) the de-facto equipment will be a Carradice and a dynamo in which case you can simply pitch your tent in the central reservation of the nearest major road while your companion spins your dynamo for light.

  8. Right, the route will be online (late) tonight. I'm breaking it down into roughly 5 mile segments, with stops at places of interest (to me). This includes riding to the top of one multi-storey car park in particular. Thinking urban alternatives to extra-urban rides here, multi-storey = grand hill with a view. Etc etc etc. All will be revealed.

Also, the route will zig-zag and make it possible to cut out sections and meet at the suggested stop spoints (there may well be more/other stop points), and folk can go as fast or as slow as they want (think Hilly Tuesdays with the meet back at the gate after every lap).

Start point is, naturally enough, Peter's Yard (I'll get there about 8.30 for a coffee before a 9 start) but you can join at any convenient point/time. End time is anyone's guess depending on a multitude of factors, but of course this isn't a strict 'you must ride this route in this time' ride - I'm just heading out and anyone is free to join me, think Rubber Duck in Convoy... - so you can disappear at any time you want!

Don't think my eighteen-month-old battery is up to sustained satellite-reception.

It'll be interesting to see if >1 bike at a time is sufficient to attract the attention of the car park's securitrons.

  11. I've often wondered, while riding up multi-storeys (I've done a few, but not the one planned for Saturday) if someone would stop me - but that said I've never seen a 'no bikes' sign on one...

"...but that said I've never seen a 'no bikes' sign on one..."

It's more just the natural suspiciousness generated by something obviously being somewhere not intended for it, like when a scruffy bearded man goes into a fashionable clothing-shop to use the toilet.

Just not sure I'll get there for 9am start. I'll get dumped at Barnton or Craigroyston at about 8.45. Maybe 8.30 if I can wrangle two bairns and the parent out of bed and into the car early enough. Maybe I should just bring my own car and abandon it at Barnton for later collection.

If you're not at the start (and if I am) I'll activate location-tracking until you turn up, then.

OK. I think I'll just bring the car though. Leave early and fuel up at PY.

OK, I have a day pass for Saturday. I have Latitude, but don't know how to give you my location unless perhaps you have my phone number?? Help?!

I can share a lift with Mr Instography though I had thought about cycling in. Is there a route map/sheet?

Yeh thats sounds good. I'll be behind the bus shelter where you saw me last time.

Wingpig and Anth, Latitude tells me I need an email address to invite friends to connect via Latitude.

@Insto's able to see me so you just need to follow him.

Yes but I don't have an email for either of you. I'll check again..... wonders off.

right I'm back. Nothing. I guess I'd need an email address. I have Insto's phone number but Latitude asks for an email address.

You'll be in the same car as him until you get to north-west Edinburgh, so just keep him in sight ans watch where he goes when you stop and detach your bikes.

Did you get a chance to put the route up? I'm still negotiating a pass but looks like I should be good to meet at PY in time for a coffee.

I forget which of my many gmail accounts I used to sign in to Latitude. Try instography at gmail dot com.

I'm looking forward to this now :D Bringing my camera - not sure if I'll use it or not but worth bringing it :) Got Deliah back from EBC and turns out they were able to fix my existing chain guard after discovering that the replacement one they sold me was too small. Just as well I didn't have a go at fitting it myself. Got a refund on the one they sold me minus the labour costs for fixing the old one. Feeling rather chuffed :D Means I'll actually be able to afford a coffee at PY

Sounds fun! I'd bring my camera, but it's been nicked, so I'll just bring me. Probably breakfast and coffee in the flat beforehand and see you at 9AM for take off.

I'm hoping we'll make PY before departure. Hoping I won't need my water proofs. I trust you have organised the weather too anth?

Once the route has been declared I can decide which lenses to bother bringing.
@kaputnik In case we go past something exceptionally photographically interesting I can lend you a Nikon D80 + lens of my choice, seeing as I still haven't sold it.
