Neighbour has got trampoline for his kids - one same age as mine. She has been wistfully looking out window, and was this afternoon kindly invited over. he mentioned that they were going to put on the protective netting etc. I allowed as how I had read worrying statistics about injuries to children caused by multiple kids on trampoline, no netting etc.

Occurs to me that he probably thinks I am nuts to allow my daughter to cycle on the road, and to run on ahead of me when we walk places, etc but to worry about the trampoline. I'm not so sure - when walking she's very good at watching for cars in driveways, and cycling I watch cars, car doors obsessively. To me the random risk of being unintentionally headbutted by another child, losing balance and falling off trampoline etc much more worrisome. But I suspect i'm in a minority.

Nope, I agree. Kids over the back had loads of falls off their trampoline, due to too many kids, footballs etc - when we got one, it was with a net.

I would guess there are more accidents from trampolines than bikes for younger kids.

And part of that is the lengthy road training you would give a kid on a bike, as opposed to "jump up and down and try not to fall off" with a tramp.

@SRD, Kids are very flexible and generally land better than us adults as they have no or minimal fear, so are more relaxed on landing.

However, we got safety net when we got our trampoline, glad we did, as you can ping off a trampoline quite suddenly, and have seen the net stop such occurences.

I think ultimately it depends on how many are on the trampoline and how clear is the landing zone around the trampoline.

    Spot on about training Nelly.

Rule #1 of trampolines: one at a time!

It's the two or more on at once that causes the pinging off effect. I've watched people training do the ping thing for fun by timing their jumps together and the height and distance available is remarkable, and they went higher than any net I've seen.

did this too, one at a time, even if one is older/bigger and more responsible !!!!! they tend to get kicked in the face by younger lighter more adventurous ones !Net is the answer but not the ultimate ! Watch them, talk and be over bearing !Blood on the carpet as you comfort them isnt great but, life isnt all cotton wool !
Never, never get on a childs trampoline, no matter how much absynth(insert your own choice here ! ) youve had, i watched irresponsible types and it wasnt nice !
I hated the very idea of trampolines but actually enjoyed sitting watching/chatting /photographing , my offspring and his friends of a summer evening, no concrete , and lots of smiles !
Always tie it to something solid ! Being woken up at 3 am , with aserious hangover( absynth again !) to be told that the trampoline is leaving the garden cause its windy, isnt good ! Yes kids are very flexible , but dont labour it !

I survived at least three parties at the Portobello Trampoline Centre. Now that was dangerous. I remember you could fall down the holes at the corners of the trampoline into the concrete pit below.

I've seen the attitude to risk from officialdom change for the better as I've been kiddiewrangling; when I started in 2000 you wrapped the kids up in Kevlar and didn't do anything ever. Then the headshrinkers realised that you learn to be a child by skinning your knee, bumping your head, getting a splinter but carrying on regardless, so it's a bit more sane now.

Hard surfaces with fast moving heads are the real worry. I see some trampolines in back gardens with pretty amazingly bad placement in terms of stones or concrete in the landing zone. I haven't used one, but the nets don't look that sturdy to me from walking past in the street. I wouldn't trust them as much as some folk evidentally do. "I'll just put it right between the pirahna pond and the sculpture made out of recently sharpened Global knives tipped with curare. It's fine - there's a net"

Had to google curare. Sounds fairly unpleasant.
