  1. Quote from a survey carried out by the BUG at work asking if people thought it would be useful for them:

"I cycle for fitness as opposed to commuting, so it's not particularly useful for me"

Ignoring the fact that commuting by bike, erm, also improves you fitness. Plus side benefits of possible bike shop deals, CTC affiliation and so cheap membership, and a few other things planned.

I just liked the quote and wanted to share it.

    Possibly translates as:

"My C2W soot bike is too bling for everyday use, oh yes"

Do not ask which of my co-workers prompted this thought.

I commute on all my bikes except my MTB / MBT (spelling??)! They all get the same love and abuse.

I also commute to save money on the buss fare (which is even cheaper than the train) as I'm a tight Yorkshire lad. It saves me even more on a Gym membership, and I can enter Audax's (the tight wads version of the Sportive!) without having to train any extra (see tight with my time too)....

Just don't expect a drink off me! ;-)

That's a daft view. In cycle training forums they're called junk miles. I suppose they might be if you're riding more than twenty hours of cycle training a week. Otherwise they can only be helping.

My limited experience of insights into the minds of people for whom a bicycle is primarily an item of sporting equipment suggests that (in addition to the need to maintain a physical distinction between devices termed the 'commuting hack' and the 'race bike' or even the 'winter training bike') commuting by bicycle uses up valuable leg-miles without outputting at a sufficiently EXTREME wattage for a significant enough time for the exercise to normally be of any use as part of the elite athlete's complicated training pattern. Alternatively, if they had to work particularly hard to get into work one morning through a headwind it might cause them to peak too early for a competition in a couple of weeks' time, or something.
