I'll be cycling from Perth to Edinburgh soon, and am tempted to go via Mawcarse and the eastern side of Loch Leven, rather than west through Milnathort and Kinross, to get away from the motorway for at least part of the journey. It adds a couple of miles, but is a bit less hilly.

Has anyone cycled the route east of Loch Leven, and is there any reason why it wouldn't be a good idea?

    Pretty flat, reasonable surface.

Some Fife roads can be a bit busy.

Have been both east and west of Loch Leven, though not the cycle path. Going through Kinross would seem more logical, then Cowdenbeath, etc. on quieter/minor roads.

The issue is the approach from Perth, I presume. Some good minor roads north east of Glenlomond, towards Aucthermuchty. Problem is the A912, as there seems to way round using it if you're keen to avoid B996 and following the M90... After Gateside, you can go through Nether Urquhart and take the back road as far as Wester Balgedie.

If you fancy some challenging climbs (but quiet roads) then go via Dunning. Nice descent down into Kinross. No motorway fumes to worry about.

Thanks for this. As it's the first time I've done it I'll probably stick to the Kinross route as I know what the roads are like. I actually don't mind cycling with traffic, even on 60mph A roads, as it keeps my legs motivated. From experience the quieter roads are the ones I end up swearing at because of the unending tiny but steep hills. :)

I ended up doing the journey both ways - on the way down, via Glenfarg, Milnathort, Kinross and Cowdenbeath; and on the way back up, Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly, Scotlandwell and Mawcarse. The journey back up was much more pleasant, little farmsteads and hills, rather than the flatter, larger farmss near the motorway. I initially thought the motorway would be very noisy, but it wasn't too bad and any wind noise from cycling muffled it out a lot.

So if I was in a rush I would go via Kinross (or drive, to be honest) but if I went that way for pleasure again I would definitely go the east side of the loch, much more picturesque.
