I have a Pashley Princess bike and recently a couple of spokes broke during riding, leading to the buckling of the rear rim. Pashley will not provide the rim alone but only whole wheels with Sturmey Archer 5-speed hub, costing £150. Is this a reasonable price to pay? I've been quoted £25 to build a wheel plus 50p per spoke if I provide my own rim. Presumably, I could buy a recycled steel rim at The Bike Station and take that, perhaps a wheel with suitable-sized spokes still attached?

I'd take it somewhere like the Bicycle Works or Edinburgh Bike Co-Op to get the current wheel fixed for a negligible fee... That is, unless you want the new hub? I would imagine the rim won't be so badly buckled that it can't be pulled back into shape...

Yes, I would agree. Perhaps the existing rim is usable. Steel may make it easier. I dented an alu rim and it wasn't advisable to bend that back.

Unless you're confident about building the hubbed wheel yourself, Bike Works etc. will build you a new and better wheel for a small fee plus parts. You can take your own rim or they can order one in for you (they may even have in stock).
My shop-built wheels have taken a beating on the roads of Edinburgh and have yet to fail me.

Bike Works should be able to get you a new rim if they beleive it needs one.

Yes, I concur, take it to a shop and get the wheel rebuilt. Bicycle Works and EBC, both good. Try Eastside Bikes too if its handier.

My experience of EBC is if you wan't it done quickly, best to avoid. It's an experience enough to have never used them again for any form of repairs / maintenance. Of course, it's not their fault they're busy / popular...
