Classic SMIDSY this morning on King stables road. I was cycling along quite happily when a large black mercedes 4x4 swerved onto my side of the road coming towards me and almost took me out. He was hunting for a parking space.Had a polite chat with the driver who at first said he didn't see me then claimed he thought I was going to go the other way.....but there was no other way it's a long straight road and if he didn't see me how could he have thought I was going to go the other way?? any way new trousers were required!!

Aye, classic "saw you but decided to ignore you". Glad you are alright though, sounds like a scary incident. Funny the excuses they come up with isn't it?
I think I had someone who actually genuinely didn't see me a few weeks ago. All the more scary since it was a long straight road and we were both travelling in the same direction. It was a large van and it came so close to me I was able to put my right hand out (arm bent) and touch it. I shouted something really sensible like "go away" and the driver immediately put the brakes on. I carried on and turned round a few times to see what they were up to and they stayed stopped in the middle of the road making me suspect the driver was just driving that huge van whilst paying no attention whatsoever.

Probably still didn't see you, just thought he was hearing voices!

Might explain the lack of rant about cycling on pavements and not paying road tax..

Has a similar one the other day heading north on Portobello High St just before the infamous anti-cycling junction. I was approaching and had to move out to the next lane to go round some works that are being done adjacent to the bus stop. A white van comes up from behind me so close it almost brushed my arm. Just past me, the pasenger looks out the window behind to look back.
As the lights were red I pulled up along side the driver: "You alright mate? You could have given me a bit more room back there", to which all 3 occupants replied with a string of F's and C's.
Didn't finish my day off too well that.Posted 14 years ago # -
Maybe we should start a google mashup type map and chart all the 'near-calls' that people report....

SRD - maybe it ends up being junctions and right turns? - that is what you get with the accident blackspot maps I have looked at.

yeah am sure you're right, just that it might have some visual power if you could get people to 'tag' things like those described here which may or may not have been reported to police, but which do affect our cycling.
then again, it might just scare off nervous cyclists...
