I know kaputnik has already posted this on another tread but I thought starting a new one would make sure people see it.

    kaputnik:

"I've had a call from David O' Leary at the Evening News, Kim put him on to me.

Plan for some photos of cross-looking cyclists pointing at p***-poor cycling facilities on Princes Street.

Meeting c. 530 on the plaza between the National Galleries, please bring yourself and your bike along if possible.

EEN isn't always the cyclists' friend, but if they do one thing well, it's front page banner headlines about tram scandals! "

Your chance to put your point across about cycling and tram tracks, this sort of publicity makes CEC sit up and take notice.

These things are always too early for me, alas, as I have my trailer with me today...

It is gather from 17:30, but I don't expect there will be any photos taken until at least 7:45 and it may well go on until after18:00 (depending on the weather)...

I have a train to catch at Waverley (1830) so will be there, but perhaps only to about 6. Depending on what state the service is between Edinburgh and Newcastle that is and if there's room for the bike.

Pretty sure trains are currently only leaving on the hour.

I might manage this if I get an early train back to Edinburgh. I'll practice my cross face.

    @NRE_EastCoast
Current situation update: East Coast (Edinburgh-Newcastle) open, but limited. West Coast (Scotland-Carlisle) closed due to o/head wire prob.
1:55pm Fri Jun 29 (or something like that)

I've had the story about the new lane markings written since 10am today but still need the council's official response to the concerns raised by people online last night. I'll post the link here when it's live. (I write for stvedinburgh.com)

@Michaelmacleod great work getting them to deny that this is a cycle lane! I certainly wouldn't think it, not with all that green tarmac, the big white bike painted on the road or even the two big blue signs in advance of the lane with bikes on them...

    From Michael's report:

A dedicated cycle lane on Princes Street has been ruled out by the council because of the large footfall on the north pavement. Council figures estimate around 70,000 pedestrians use the pavement on any given Saturday.

A trams information leaflet from 2009 concluded: "At any location in the city centre there simply isn't enough road space to meet everyone's wishes. To allow a cycle lane that complies with UK standards, a significant area of footway space would need to be removed.

"In simple terms, the benefits to cyclists are outweighed by the detriment to pedestrians, particularly given the number of users involved."

And yet, just last year somehow Gehl architects' Master Plan for the city centre found space for wide pavements and cycle lanes in each direction on Princes Street and George Street.

How did they perform this miracle? Simple. They removed buses from Princes Street and George Street; removed cars from Princes Street; removed car parking from George Street, just providing one lane for cars each way.

Very simple and something the Council could, and should implement. That would require them to not cave in to every shopkeeper and car driver who thinks driving along Princes Street and parking on George Street are essential.

Instead, we've got this mish-mash. It's very, very, sad.
