Brief conversation at the Myreside Road traffic lights this morning with Chug. Embarrassingly, I had to admit that I recognised him but couldn't recall where from. He tactfully reminded me that we'd spent a considerable time talking about green roofs for bike sheds...
Any, the answer to Chug's original question is here: http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/awebright-hi-viz-spoke-clips

@chdot - is this an east coast recreation of the spiral?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Would seem so -
"
Improved and enhanced security, lighting and well-maintained amenity areas including local play areas, raised gardening beds and a community park, and incorporating a spiral mound feature with a Safe Route to School established
"

Other spirals are available -

A prerequisite of a well used, healthy and safe greenspace is a high standard of maintenance and cleanliness. Poor maintenance produces hazards for the public and staff, and leads to an overall feeling that the site is uncared for. This can lead to a downward spiral of neglect and misuse that devalues the site and deters genuine users.

Alanr on his recumbent trike on Slateford Road yesterday evening. Had a brief chat - he's a bit busy at the moment hence not appearing here much.
You would have thought that a recumbent would have been quicker into yesterday's headwind than a Brompton - however to my surprise I caught him up. I think this was because he was quite sensibly spinning away in a small gear, while the bottom gear on the Brompton isn't working so I was working harder (also I was in a bit of a hurry).

Maybe the tilted-back head position of a recumbent is less suitable for allowing pointy attack-hail to be borne on the supraorbital ridge rather than the eyes.

Gembo is much quicker at clocking me than I am him (I blame my eyesite) and managed a confused "Hello" on my part as I computer who it was then later decided that a passing "Hello!" in the wind sounds a bit like a passing "Gembo!" in the wind so pretended to myself that I said that.

Upright spot
CC on his very Dutch Pastoorfiets (from LB!) with dynamo lighting. No yellow jacet required...!Downright spot
fimm - " You would have thought that a recumbent would have been quicker into yesterday's headwind than a Brompton"Depends.... Lots of different types you know. AlanR takes a shedload of stuff with him. His trike is also full suspension. Whilst recliners might not always outpace other bikes they generally can 'outcomfort' them!

More of a 'meet' than a 'spot', but while I was in Kinetics after work today, I met the force of nature that is Fraser Scott.
Yes, that Fraser Scott, a sprightly eighty year-old, and the man who invented the Scottoiler.

I thought you were in town and it would have been brilliant to catch up with Fraser as well - should have shouted - but was a bit busy counting gaps between sleepers for a tram project.

@Laidback, I think I just went on the assumption "recumbent of any kind will be faster into the wind than I am on the Brompton" and was surprised when it wasn't the case. If I'd caught him when I was going uphill on my road bike, for example, I'd have been less surprised.
Spotted Alanr again yesterday, as it happens, but this time there was no speed contest as I was pushing my bike home (puncture, which I'd already failed to fix once).

Never Knowingly Legal Man, surprisingly far away from the footways of Rutland Square, with a moustache, going over the stop line on a red at Meadowbank.

Tandem in Roseburn Park this afternoon. I've seen it on several occasions and may now recognise the pilot from the EEN 20mph video: daisydaisy?

Lovely Mercian heading south on Craigmillar Park last night. Appeared to be brand new for spring, and you could tell that a serious mechanic had built it by the beautiful alignment of the brand names on the components.
Guy riding it tried to be cool but cracked at the second set of lights as I gawped.

There is a picture in the Mercian gallery of a 1979 mercian belonging to Kyle brooks. Had nitto flattish bars with brown leather and a brown leather brooks saddle with a black fake leather brooks recently reissued saddle bag and red cables on a Bianchi blue frame. Not usually a man for tiny details but to go to all that trouble for it not to quite work makes me wince a little. Hey but still lovely.
Mercian classically do not post pictures of the bikes they sell. Just type as you will already know what it looks like I guess. But the rightly proud owners post pictures of their own bikes to a gallery page. I am guessing this may have been done previously as a fanzine?

Is the ability to determine the manufacturer of a bicycle or frame from a distance something you've all had to work at or trained yourselves to do, or do you just eventually start picking it up?

There is an evening class riunning at Balerno high after Easter - Distance spotting of bicycle frame manufacturers
Places still available
My technique is to look At bikes parked in racks to practise before I get out on the highway

@wingpig
Oh, I was close enough to perv the components, build quality and discrete branding on the old school coach livery paint job.
It's trees that I can identify from a distance.

The ash and the elm are quite tricky to separate from a distance without leaves.
I am quite good at identifying West Kip from a distance but it is very big.
I would seriously go to a class on bird spotting if it was not for the requirement of wearing green Rohan trousers.

wingpig with a scowl on his face, wading into a bunch of pedestrians on NEPN just past St Marks park entrance before Chancelot Path.
Personally, my first ride home without hat and gloves this year.

See the gallery 'stalker alert' on Flickr for evidence, captured by Wilmington. Default expression not helped by viral neuralgia and the U-turning MTB-er youth.
