If the intention of the "Cyclists Dismount" sign is for cyclists to walk along the pavement, then the sign is not necessary, as cyclists can do that anyway.

Therefore, it must mean dismount and use the carriageway (presumably to avoid inconveniencing precious motorists)

It seems to be a virus spreading amongst traffic control companies

See this thread for some details from Ranty Highwayman: https://twitter.com/lucullus/status/848156960381906944

My reading is that if a cycle lane is to be closed and there is no alternative route, there is a sign specified for this situation: 'Cyclists dismount and use footway' (traffic signs manual chap 8 pt 3 drawing P7018.1) . We're talking something along the lines of closing the cycling half of middle meadow walk. It's interesting having a skim of part one, this sign isn't ever used in an example layout.

Temporary traffic lights like these are not an appropriate use, as a cyclist is quite entitled to use the roadway.

(edit, Just noticed this is the spotted thread, any chance of a split into a new topic? It's worth discussing.)

I was spotted this evening as I trundled into town along the canal path. My brain was miles away and I have no idea who you were - sorry!

I had a look at the Kilgraston/Marchmont junction afterwards. What a nonsense. The dismount signs are, in all probability, to 'encourage' cyclists to get off the damn road and stop slowing down all those important drivists.

ShuggieT on Craigmillar Park. I got all bashful about what was in my trailer but he gallantly let it go.

My bike has just been spotted on twitter by someone I know only via Twitter.

The person who posted the picture is someone else who I only know via Twitter.

    Small world.

Various cyclists negotiating the King's Theatre Junction while I was co-manning a Green Party stall earlier this afternoon. Possibly Mr. SRD on a Dahon folding bike?

@HankChief, I'm pretty sure I spotted you outside the Roseburn Tesco turning into the wee daft shared use path and then overtaking us under the WAR bridge over Russell Rd (recce mission for feeder ride?). We've not actually met but I was wearing a silver reflective jacket and shepherding some offspring variously on bike seat and bike.

Hi - I had wondered if you were a CCE'r with your quaxing and kiddy wrangling. I now rehouse your child seat from you last photo.

I was on a reconnaissance mission for next weekend's feeder ride - Looks like I will be needing to another building compnay to get them to unblock the route :-(

The turning off Dalry Rd onto the path up to the Telfer Subway is blocked by some works. The diversion isn't suitable for any volume of cyclists in a hurry to get off a busy road...

Oh. Just exchanged wavea with laidback on the Meadows

Yes HC - then wondered if you were heading to LB as I had left a wee bit early.
I do have the big POP banner in basement - Kim has passed on this news to Sally I think.

Lot of naughty motor bikers driving their vehicles across the Barmouth estuary foot and cycle bridge, air rescue helicopter (just a drill) and confirmation that I saw swallows there on Thursday.

    The swallows are coming

Entire Morningsider clan on towpath this morning. On way back from picking up touring pedals at Evans, 37 per cent off. Look too big for winter road bike. Might put them on commuting hike. Beautiful Brompton In Evans, £1735.

Many people I knew not CCE related. Hoaching with dogs but all share fun and games.

Taxi with "Life is better at 20" advert splashed across it.

Was unable to catch eye of driver to give him big smile and thumbs up, he seemed to be avoiding eye contact.

Five police on bicycles cycling as a vehicle-sized unit up George IV Bridge yesterday afternoon before halting in the ASZ. When the lights turned green they set off at a fairly moderate pace, but used their 'ping' bells surprisingly aggressively to suggest that the tourists still crossing the road at the far side of the junction get out of their way. They spread out a bit as they headed down Bank Street whilst continuing to maintain a strong primary position.

A new bike shed at KB being built, on the spot where there used to be a Paolozzi.

Some will call this an improvement on multiple fronts.

Fella walking a mountain bike down the Old Pentland Road. Nail through the tyre. Still had all the way to Bonnyrigg to walk. Ouch.
