Anyone use the link between Silverknowes Eastway and Muirhouse Drive?

Seems there are plans to shut it.

I once strayed on there by accident with no.1 son on child seat about 3 years ago. We took a wrong turn.

Can't say it would be missed, seems to mainly carry local neds who throw bottles onto the main path, set fire to things, etc.

There was a local consultation on options, which was due to youngsters on the Muirhouse side coming though and causing problems on the Silverknowes side, vandalism etc

Missed this first time around. It's truly bizarre that the city is considering barricading one neighbourhood from another, detouring a school route across a main road. Sending a message that one part of the populace is to consider themselves excluded from the adjacent area..!

Anyway, in the days of my youth this would have been a red flag to either scale the barricades or, if truly impossible, to maraud the long way around.

    Depressing!

I live in Silverknowes and have had a couple of run-ins with the aforementioned neds. I can understand the reason why some residents want this link closed, but agree with Dave that it'll not have much impact. What it needs, of course, is improved policing and zero tolerance to antisocial behaviour, but that in turn needs short term money to be spent for long term gain... which ain't gonna happen, is it?

I can't really imagine anyone being stupid enough to go for barricades between city neighbourhoods, but just in case I took a minute to pester my councillors (two of whom are on the appropriate committee).

When I worked in muir house in the Mid 1990s this was an issue. we worked to engage the young people in more sociable activities. We didn't do very well. As has been said one thing a ned can do is climb a wall, or a bus shelter with anti-climb paint or hurdle quite high hedges through people's gardens whilst the polis monitor the situation.

The namesake of the hedge hurdler was even the first Briton to climb everest without oxygen and come back down and get on blue Peter.

The everest climber was not a ned but he was given a focus that got him to the top of the world ma.

Building a barricade like in Belfast or wherever is a practical thing that might appeal to some people as something "concrete" that can be done. But it won't stop the agile neds

A better plan might be to retain the link path but flatten Muirhouse and replace it with something more suited for people to live in (as has been done further towards Granton). Indeed, would be interested to hear if that particular bit of urban regeneration has resulted in a decline in ned-related issues. Anyone know?

I cycled from leith to Crammond and on the bit through granton the young people I spoke to were all civil

I occasionally use this cut through if I'm on my way to Silverknowes from Muirhouse - it saves a fair detour round by road.
As has already been said- blocking it isn't going to solve the long standing problems Muirhouse has.

They are already in the process of flattening large parts of Muirhouse. Unfortunately simply building house doesn't necessarily change the problems or the behavior of some of the people that live there.

It's ironic because that railing is hardly likely to stop 'undesirables' but will presumably impact a lot more on i.e. mother with young kids. You'd think people would realise there's a danger of encouraging these 'rampages' by taking such provocative action, but hey...

From the photo, those railings appear to include a horizontal strip at waist height for easy-of-clambering over. Should successfully keep out everyone younger than 7 and older than 70.
