You mean restricting the river to half it's previous width isn't the best way to prevent flooding?

Yeah i was trying to get to Wallyford this morning and had to give up. I counldn't even filter through the traffic on my bike as so many drivers had wandered out of lane etc to get a better view of what was ahead and why they had stopped. in torrential rain, days after previous floods ...

It's at times like this that I miss the 24" fording capability of my old motorbike. I'd go out by bicycle but I'd get soaked and cold.

Taste of Edinburgh organisers today said they were determined the show must go on.Justin Clarke, CEO of Taste Festivals said: “As Billy Connolly said – there’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Make sure you are kitted out in your wellies and your party socks.”

There's also such a thing as siting your festival at the lowest and most flood-prone point of the Meadows, a location from which natural drainage is very slow and there's nowhere else really to try and pump the place dry.
Same view after a deluge previous week;
Even a few hours of rain normally turns that bit into a marsh...

There's a 5.5m tide (fairly high in the cycle) at 17:15 at Leith. Could get "interesting"
Posted 13 years ago # -
Yes, Musselburgh might be affected by that too. Here's the river this morning. Spot the returning ERC group:

Not looking too good at Warriston this afternoon:
but the Braid Burn was holding, just, at Mid Liberton:
while the big weir at Dean village was flowing well:
and that was the water level down a foot from earlier in the day!

Not long back from a cycle. Mainly down the Water of Leith. A bit wet.
No way through at Roseburn by ccbb7766, on FlickrGot my feet wet for sure here. It was deeper than it looked (although someone did warn me):

@Arellcat what time where you at Warriston?
It had gone down by about 4.
Posted 13 years ago # -
I was at Liberton about 11.45, Warriston about 12.35 and Dean about 15.15 with some lunch inside me. I was guessing that the water was about 5 feet above normal.

Down in London playing ambulance with the crowds at the Hyde Park festivals. Nowhere near as damp as up north, but we're certainly pulling some muddy people out of the crowd. Expecting today to be worse, as yesterday will have already ruined the surface.
Bog snorkeling anyone?

A flood prevention scheme, costing £11.5m, is currently underway in the area and locals have told Forth News part of an old wall had been removed before new defences were put in place.
Sandbags had apparently been put in place to try to plug the gap but they failed to hold back the fast-flowing water.
