and now the article we've all been waiting for...

Personally, I'm not that convinced of the benefits of bike share schemes, but maybe I'll be converted.

    Oh joy
"Tram bosses have already said they intend to allow trials in which cyclists will be able to take their bikes onboard – a UK first. However, the trial will not begin until at least a year after the trams are up and running."

    and

The Real Alfonsa Pedrosa (there are fakes? or is it like the REAL Ghostubsters?)
"Sounds a good plan for reducing cars and having fresh air,but keep the cyclists of our pavements."

and that's just the start... I don't think I read a single positive comment on there

    Did I really say "lukewarm"?

    (I don't remember!)

Reads like I went to the ENews - they contacted me for a quote. I'm not complaining, but I assumed someone else had raised the issue - or that something had happened.

If anything this is old news and things have moved on in a (slightly) more positive way.

    Well they work.

Whether they are 'cost effective' is another issue.

THERE IS NO DOUBT that many of the people using them weren't previously cycling in those city centres.

IF Edinburgh said 'we have looked at all the other schemes and have concluded that the same money would be better spent on'...

    BUT

    There is no money.

Options for advertising - revenue - (in Edinburgh) is reduced by the "Streetscape" view of the world.

I might suggest that a Scottish Vélib' is the 'price' for Edinburgh to be a 'European City' - bit like the tram - only cheaper...

I know we mention it periodically, but what is Streetscape, and why is it such an issue in Edinburgh? I googled it, and the first thing that came up was actually London, which suggests that it shouldn't prevent bike schemes.

NEXT time you talk to the press - record your conversation, that way you can punish them when they misquote you...

"NEXT time you talk to the press - record your conversation"

I quite often only quote by e-mail.

But yesterday I was between meetings and didn't want to spare the extra time to 'phone him and then compose my reply.

He's one journalist I don't worry about being misquoted by or (worse) 'taken out of context'.

Sometimes I just have to be careful not to say what I really think....

    "what is Streetscape"

In general - "Edinburgh Standards for Streets is proposing a mechanism for achieving improvement and coherence in the public realm"

More specifically (in this context) a section of Planning concerned about the appearance of the city - but mostly concerned with the centre/World Heritage bits.

Notable for not wanting red surfacing (on ASLs) and for ability to turn blind eye to parked or moving vehicles.

"Turn the air blue would ya?"

Not so much the language - more the strength of feeling.

Years of frustration of watching good ideas/intentions/initiatives going nowhere because of competing agendas/priorities.

Obviously I/'we'/others want more people cycling (more often) but there still far too many people (in the UK) who see cars (and their 'needs') as more important/economically vital/natural etc. than cyclists, pedestrians, people, streetscapes/public space/health/trees etc. etc...

There are microcosms of this within in the Council. How else to explain that the red surface on Marchmont Road never gets renewed while money is spent on ........................... fill in the space yourself.

I'm guessing that's a cynical viewpoint rather than a specific goal of Streetscape?

The second bit is jaundiced observation, the first bit is true.
