Cyclist down at the roundabout at Sth Gyle Crec
concious with Police/Ambulance in attendance
hopefully get more info
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
Cyclist down at the roundabout at Sth Gyle Crec

suspected broken hip,cut to the head
cyclist is local to the accident scene
Road still closed at this point
Car still at the scene while police look at the scene/decide whats happened
Driver breathalised & clear.no charge at this point AFAIK
Not good. This year certainly seems to be worse for incidents. Hope the rider is okay, or at least can recover well.
No blame apportioned without any facts (I also have no idea what it's like to cycle that bit).
well its a smidsy from the drivers point of view
so time will tell what happened
Ah, did that come from police/witnesses? If basic smidsy then there's no excuse.
That is a truly miserable area to ride in and that roundabout worries me on the rare occasion I need to go out that way.
Any one heard from Kappers?
"Any one heard from Kappers? "
He tweeted about half an hour ago so should be okay.
The bike, two cop cars and the collision investigation vehicle were still there an hour ago, although the car and cyclist weren't around any more.
Looked like a maroon MTB or hybrid at a glance, certainly not like Nelly's or Kappers bikes. Not me either, evidentally.
Roads just re-opened apparently.
Ah, did that come from police/witnesses? If basic smidsy then there's no excuse.
straight from the drivers mouth.
I don't know what happened though as to road position etc
As said, not a nice road(I have seen a bike hit there before) plus poor road surface as well
The surface is horrible coming off that roundabout where the bike was lying; really not easy to get out of trouble there.
Is this South Gyle Crescent?
When I came past, Bankhead Drive was closed between South Gyle Access and Broomhouse Roundabout and the Police collision unit + 2 other cars and a pair of motorbikes were on the scene.
The road was closed in direction of the Gyle and traffic was being rerouted up towards Calder Road and then back down past Stevenson/Napier/Bank of Scotland.
Bankhead Drive, yarp.
yeah sorry,When i was 1st told about it. it was described as the 'end of the road'
Which would be Sth Gyle crec
My normal commute, but I have long-since abandoned the road for the path, even in its current state.

Maybe, but I fear modern car design makes SMIDSY more common, mostly due to the Euro NCAP front end collision requirement. The easy way to meet this requirement is to give the vehicle thick A-pillars (the ones either side of the windscreen) and the blind-spots created can be huge. It's very difficult to be aware of the effect because the brain compensates for gaps in the visual field.
Have a look at this. I certainly approach cars in the second and third collumn with extra caution since I became aware of this problem and I won't buy another Toyota Yaris either.
I hope they are okay.
As someone who has never owned a car but occasionally hires them it has become very obvious in recent years that cars now have extremely thick A pillars which makes seeing out of them more difficult. Going round right hand bends is the worst as there is really no way to see if there is anything coming towards you. Coming out of a junction you need to lean forward to ensure it is clear rather that just drive over anyone in your way but I don't suppose every driver does this.
The last car we hired had the speedometer in front of the passenger so it was barely visible from the drivers seat unless you craned your neck to see it.
to those who saw it
Am i right in thinking it was around the right turn here?
And I am increasinly exasperated by drivers who make things worse by sticking Satnavs to their windscreens.
Saw one the other day that was directly in front of the driver, I think the idea was that they could look over the top of it. I was looking at them in my rear view mittor and their face from the nose down was obscured by it.
@custard didn't see it, but based on the position of Police cars and how the road was blocked off, that would fit.
I wondered
its on my commute(when I could cycle!)
That right turn is a real danger in the AM(and probably all day)
drivers go to the far right lane, then swing left on the turn. or vice versa
Min,
Yes, our Volvo 940 is largely the same as the 140s from the 1960s and it's much better for visibility at junctions. The windscreen is more vertical than modern ones and the pillars are not in the way.
The V40 has exactly the problem you describe as does my dad's S80. I assume the windscreen rake lowers their drag.
SatNav on the windscreen means you don't have to look away from the road as much when you want to check the screen. I've got it at the very bottom right corner of the windscreen, almost resting on the top of the dashboard.
Using it in Edinburgh means I've seen bits of town I wouldn't have been in otherwise. It's also good for answering the weans when they ask "Are we there yet?" I can give them distance to a 1/10 of a mile and an ETA.
Thats exactly how we have our satnav set up.
We have our satnav low centre, just above the dash level directly below the rear view mirror, when solo it blocks little or no view of the road but is easy to glance at, when a passenger is in they can watch it and tell the driver where to go.

Anyone witness cyclist come off bike, Portobello High St crossroads, Mon 8am? Info appreciated! http://fb.me/Yblew5ed @CyclingEdin #edinburgh

+1 - think we discussed this, and had decided, unilaterally, that we couldnt take the road any more - surface is brutal and we both had concerns that the road, rather than a car, would cause us damage - says it all really.
I have given up FixMyStreeting it.
Hope the cyclist is ok.
@Min, your point re the car A frames/Pillars - they are thicker as many now contain air bags - I notice it in mine, and its a lot worse than 10 years ago - its ironic that its a safety feature which is particularly unsafe for other road users!!
I presume this is the accident?

Poor guy is in hospital. Police want witnesses.
If custard's informant hasn't spoken to the police, perhaps custard should encourage them to do so?
yeah they were there at the time. So police informed
rumour has it this is going to court in the next 2 weeks
