Despite the economy shrinking by 6% plus per year for the past 3 years, bike shops are apparently booming because folk can't afford to run their cars any more (Greek petrol now the 2nd most expensive in the EU after austerity tax hikes).
According to the bike shop owner interviewed, people in Greece are looking for a 'different way to live'.*
So said Radio 4 this morning, about 8am-ish. Sorry, no link, can't recall what programme either. Just need to take my word for it.
* The reporter was pleasantly surprised by this, but persisted in seeing not running a car as 'a bad thing' elsewhere in the feature. Bad for filling stations, certainly.
