Anyone got any recommendations for a cheap, stiff soled, grippy shoe/trainers for cycling with flat pedals? ( I have looked at some running shoes but they seem at least as expensive as "proper" cycling shoes

I have the same dilemma, being a flat pedal (or touring pedal plus toeclips/straps) kinda guy. I tend to find bowling shoes (ten-pin), basketball boots (proper ones, not Converse All-Stars canvas) and tennis shoes work quite well. Bowling shoes best for combination of sole stiffness, grip, and comfort.

I've been looking around for vintage leather 1960s cycling shoes but they're all in weird sizes or expensive...

Get cycling shoes but don't fit cleats?

Yeah I looked at that too but they can be hellish expensive for a shoe you basically only use for cycling. Still might do it though if I get the audax bug...

I got some simple black Shimano shoes years ago. They are a bit smelly when wet but not too spendy.

    Toeclips here.

Lidl do cycling shoes from time to time (but not in their last lot of cycling stuff). Adequate + cheap = value for money.

Otherwise, sale bottom of the range Shimano "MTB" shoes; slighlty more expensive, slighlty longer lasting.

There are lots of cheap trekking shoes around which have reasonably thick/stiff soles, and they ought to last a good while if mostly used for pedalling.

Decathlon do a waterproof one for thirty quid. Sole wears out and starts squeaking but has stayed waterproof

In the small time between getting shoes and fitting my crank brothers pedals I found using stiff soled (road type) shoes without clips a bit alarming. They don't grip the pedals in any way so can feel a bit

Guess the MTB shoes are a bit rubbery-er and would give a bit more purchase.

I find my walking specific boots to be quite adequate for riding in, stiff, waterproof (ish) and fairly cheap in tk.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. @Insto, I looked at those but they don't have my size.
I will check out bowling and tennis shoes but a cursory look at the web seems still quite dear.
Will keep an eye on lidl etc.
In the meantime if anyone has any other recommendations?

I've got a pair of waterproof merrell's which do the job nicely but any pair of outdoor/walking shoes should do the job fine

Yeah I used to wear my Merrells. They are great on a platform pedal: stiff sole and grippy. I find they are not good with toe clips: too bulky around the toe.

You could try this page for a rough idea:

CRC shoes priced from low to high: MTB and road.

That said, for a good while I rode wearing hiking boots plugged into toe clips, but eventually went to SPDs with some trainer-style mtb shoes.

Bought some Tesco (ff) trainers. Really stiff and grippy sole. £14 the pair. Will see how they do over the next couple of months.

Sandy Wallace shop in Inverkeithing has a small selection of Shimano trainer-looking MTB/SPD compatible shoes reduced from £50 to £25.

Communter? Is that a typo or some sort of in group I don't know about? If it isn't it should be!

I have communter days when I go in in my civvies with one leg rolled up.

$95? :o For some plimsoles? It would be cheaper to keep your Chuck Taylors and fit some outsize pedals!

Watch out for those Chuck laces. I got mine wrapped round the folding pedal this morning
