Scottish Health Survey: Obesity still problem for Scots

Obesity is still a major problem for many people in Scotland, with a growing number of children being classed as overweight, new figures have shown.

The 2011 Scottish Health Survey results showed that obesity "has increased significantly since 1995" but remained broadly stable since 2008.

Growing obesity was also highlighted in a separate Glasgow University report.

It found waistlines had become bigger in the past 10 years while average muscle mass among Scots had fallen.

I am glad they reported muscle mass too since it circumvents the old "BMI increases are caused by bodybuilding" chestnut.

Yep, I still have a problem with pizza which cycling han't fixed. Despite cycling more than 100 miles most weeks, I am well into the obese category.

I like pizza, mmm, pizza, dinner sorted!

Still, it could be worse, we could be the East Midlands:

Interesting that London is the lowest. Healthier lifestyles (less driving due to good public transport) or just fewer middle-aged 'spare tyres' and more lithe youngsters?

Until a few years ago, I was cycling daily to work (20 miles per day). With a change of job/circumstances/location, I now don't have that daily dose, and my job takes me away from home regularly. In my line of work (a very large, global IT company), that was inevitable, a common occurence these days(?) It has made a difference in waistline :-(

Now trying to compensate by getting evening rides a couple of times a week when possible, and longer rides at weekends. Also helps that my oldest daughter has started taking cycling more seriously, and I helped her buy a road bike recently, though she now lives and works in Dundee. We did the Tour Ride in Dumfries a few weeks back, great day out, keen to do more sportives, though need to get climbing legs going - if I can remember where I left them :-)

Oh, and my youngest brother wants to do some Alpine routes for his 50th in a couple of years - Alpe d'Huez here we come...

So did I, but I was in my mid-20s. The post-30 year old flab had yet to appear.....having said that, I put weight on due to being able to afford things like eating out, and taking relatively little exercise (desk job), despite still smoking at the time. Lost all the weight again when I came back to Edinburgh and started cycling everywhere again.

How long ago were you in London?

Nobody walking round my office could deny we have a problem. Sadly, I think a lot of the fat people get to a tipping point where they are (or think they are) too big to exercise, so just keep on eating/taking the lift up one flight etc.

It really saddens me to see people like this, but I also wish people would take a wee bit more personal responsibility and exercise / eat proper home cooked food instead of processed junk

London from October '88 till September '91. I was 22 when I went there. I stayed in Kilburn and worked in Kensington. I went almost everywhere by bike except on Friday nights when I walked from Kensington to Victoria to get the bus north.

I don't mind going for a vist these days, took the Brompton there two weeks ago, but I wouldn't want to stay for long. It's nice knowing your way round without a map. My mum wants me to take her on a tour of the city some time but she really doesn't ride a bike.

They are indeed doing it right this time.
