    Received this recently -

    Dear City Cycling Edinburgh,

I have recently been made aware of a tweet in which you tagged Waitrose regarding bike racks outside our branch in Morningside. This is an issue that we have been working on for some time.

I am keen to resolve this situation, and would appreciate your input to guide us in purchasing some additional racking.

    "

A small delegation visited yesterday and found the store genuinely keen to add more racks and wanting advice on what sort.

    Today this was emailed -

    "
Spotted these racks near haymarket this morning and thought they would serve our purpose. This is a modified sheffield, sometimes called an edinburgh rack, because it also has the mid-level rail.

Those are much better than normal Sheffield racks.

Well done Waitrose for asking the users what they want...

Result! Well done, and good to see a company listening and acting.

Well, if these racks do go in, I daresay we might have to do a couple of Waitrose shops to express our gratitude. It's not that much further than Cameron Toll.

I go there anyway what with it being my nearest Supermarket, but now I won't have reason to humm and haww while I lock up the bike and then curse and swear as I try load it up! Result.

I would say that from the photo, it looks like those racks at Haymarket would take only a regular spanner out the toolbox would get them out the ground.

Yes, racks need to be concreted into the ground to a depth of something like 12 or 18 inches. You might find that your bike insurance is void if you lock to a stand that doesn't meet those standards.

Mind you, nothing is screwed down to the most determined. I've heard tell of someone whose concrete garage floor was stolen.

my thinking is that the new racks at waitrose would be best in front of the window - less risk of theft/vandalism, as well as more room to maneuvre bikes in an out (am I the only person who finds the wall behind the racks a apain?). But then they will be further from the main door. Don't know how much that would discourage people from using them?

There was talk some years ago about cycle trailers are loaned out free of charge to any Waitrose customers who want to use one. Sadly it never reached Scotland, despite Waitrose customers asking for it.

    And CEC says -

    "
I see from the CCE forum that Waitrose are installing new racks at their Morningside store.

We would like to offer them some help with this (specifications, layouts etc).

Can you provide me with the manager's e-mail address so that I can contact him?

Please don't let CEC get involved or they might end up taking racks away a la Rose Street or putting parking bays there a la QBiC!

"Please don't let CEC get involved or they might end up taking racks away a la Rose Street"

It's all right that was a different bit of the Council...

"or putting parking bays there a la QBiC"

Hard to know who to blame for that.

Of course it will be fine when it's officially opened...

I sent a message asking for more racks to the manager of the Morningside Waitrose, using the website, some weeks ago. I haven't had a reply in all that time.

Apparently they are waiting for some rack details from CEC.

AND they are considering trialling trailers...

Oh that's good! Thanks. Let's hope CEC obliges.

That's good news. I was reflecting earlier the week that no changes had been made and was debating whether or not to get in touch and ask if new racks were still planned.

The Sheffield Stands at Warrender Park Scotmid have been dug up for a few weeks as work men were digging a c. 20 foot deep pit in the pavement to replace some underground contrivance or another. Looks like they're going back very imminently, complete with the 2 bikes that have been abandoned on them for about 6 months.

I often wonder about abandoned bikes. Who leaves them? I suppose somewhere like Warrender Park they could just be left by students who finish their studies and can't be bothered with the hassle of taking them away. But even so, surely someone else might want them.

What is more perplexing are the bikes abandoned in the center of town. Someone's obviously used them to get there - what happened next?

    UPDATE

'requested our Store Improvement team to provide some more bike racks'

'hopeful that I may be able to procure 2 cycle trailers for the branch in the not-too-distant future'

to provide some more bike racks

So they're leaving in the rubbish existing ones? Better hope the new ones aren't more of the same!

@AKen I also wonder about abandoned bikes and who leaves them?

The answer of what to do about then is easier send them to the Bike Station. Contact the Environmental Wardens at the City of Edinburgh Council on tel. 0131 200 2000 for help with getting these removed to the Bike Station and they can be re-used or recycled.

I could be wrong, but there's a lot of cement mess everywhere under the racks and it feels like the slabs to which the racks are bolted have been levelled, so at least the loaded bike doesn't roll away now.
