It was cold this morning, as cold as last Thursday I'd say! I had intended to enter but the forcast was for snow and as the week went on it has firmed up as being horrid.

Not me. Too lumpy and too chilly! More snow on the way, allegedly...

    @fimm

Got my Dave Harris Memorial (who was he, does anyone know?) route sheet yesterday

Google is your friend: Dave Harris

"Dave was a stalwart of the Lothians CTC, when he died in the mid ninties it was considered to be an appropriate tribute to him as his wife used to run the canteen at the finish of this event, then called the Tour of Upper Tweedsmuir."

    Cheers, Focus.

Came in to work on the big bike this morning. Was about right going up hill but then got cold going down. Hands were cold.

I wasn't in my warmest kit so wrapping up warmer can be done. It is more the combination of gusty wind and potentially icy roads that has me worried. And being out for at least 10 hours in it...

I guess I'm going to start.... am I mad?

    "am I mad?"

Do you mean compared with the average audaxer??

I have done a bit of winter hillwalking, so I have good thermals and stuff. Cycling seems to be even more demanding, though, as you get hotter on the way up and colder on the way down and it is more of a faff to stop and change layers.

Fiona, watch this space, with the weather as it is I can see it being delayed until later in the year.

DaveC, how would they let us know? Or would it be a case of turning up on Sunday to be told that it was being postponed? (I could live with that!!)

(I didn't know Audaxes could be delayed...)

There's an alternative route for the Dave Harris (instead of Talla, via Moffat) which has been deployed in the past.

Remember, four mad folk brave souls completed the Forth & Tay, blizzards, high winds and all.

So aye, Audaxers are a bit crazy. Or "badass" as someone infamously put it...

@Fiona, suppose either text or email? I think its paper only entry right?

I'm not saying it will be delayed as I'm not Sonya but I have heard rumours. If your on Farcebook I'd search for Audax Ecosse and request to join or join YACF instead and follow the relevent thread.

I was meant to be out on a big ride this weekend - however my shoes have still not arrived which means I do not have suitable (non knee breaking) footwear. Another weekend of recovery and rest I guess....

    @DaveC, yes, paper entry only.

YACF is a good idea, I'll go and take a look there. I did do a search for an Audax Ecosse Facebook group a while back but couldn't find it - it is possible I looked for "Audax Scotland" - I'll give it another go.

    Hi Fimm,

I don't think I can add you unless we are fb freinds as you don't apprear when I add your name. You could try just clicking to add yourself to the group? Sorry, I found you via pop but there is not an option to add you as a freind.

    Cheers DaveC.
I've requested to join the group, but need to be approved by an admin. I recognise one of the names, so hopefully that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

    It's been cancelled.
    Phew...
Rescheduled for September, by the looks of the Facebook thread.

I've taken the plunge and entered the 300k Merse and Moors. Supposedly still pretty fierce weather by then, but it doesn't have too much west to east against our new prevailing. Worst part might be subjecting myself to training before then.

All being well, I should manage a DIY 100k tomorrow. Wind speed fairly low at least, if cold. Up to Roslin, then Dunbar and back.

Thanks for linking here too. I did consider just posing it in this thread but it does seem to be so highly populated by audax posts that I thought some people might not view it if not interested in that discipline.

Tricky one I suppose - on the one hand, they are both amateur "fun" cycling disciplines but they do seem to be an either or thing - riders tend to do one or the other but not both. On the other hand, separate them into to sub-fora and you create a bit of a "them" and "us" situation which might mean people missing out on some posts which could be of eqaul interest to either group.

Cracking ride out to Roslin and Dunbar today. A lot milder than I expected, so I was a bit overdressed at points and got hot on climbs. A gentle headwind on the run to Dunbar along the A199, but smooth as silk with it behind me on the way back.

Lovely sunshine for much of the day, of course I'd forgotten my shades. This is where a peaked cap comes in handy.

Railway paths still snowy in the moening around Roslin, so detour via Roslin Glen, which is a very pleasant way to go.

Tried out the shared use path between East Linton and Dunbar, due to motor racing going on at that stretch of A1999. Stretches were very good (3 metres wide), others poor or just acceptable. If they sorted that out it would be a good alternative to the fast road. They also need to enforce the speed limit on that road better (maybe reduce the limit too): some traffic was faster there than on the adjacent A1 dual carriageway...

The A199 is a nightmare bit of road isn't it! Me and a friend were out there a few weeks back on a snowy day with a killer head wind and although we were only on it for 2 miles there were quite a few close passes. Not fun! Sounds like you had a good ride though.

To be fair, most drivers were behaving responsibly. Always a few idiots though. Close pass by a flat bed light truck which was fair barelling along: not pleasant. Also a lot of speeding going on: "hot hatches" seemed to be the main culprits, with Minis pushing for 2nd spot (the ones with the 'racing' stripes: Mini Clubman S ?).

Nah, a Googol shows it's Mini Cooper (sometimes with an 'S' at the end). They're the sporty minis that used to be famous for winning races.
