avatars - what a great idea. some could wear helmets....

Oh dear, I was hoping for a grown up discussion on the issue, not a slanging match. I know it can be a very emotive issue but I would encourage people to read the evidence and make an informed choice.

@Kim - I would refer back to recombodna's comment "........it's very difficult to convey yer emotions"
I think SRD was making an attempt at "humor" there, simply put, all she said was "those who choose to"
I have read the evidence and made my informed choice so I would be wearing a lid in any avatar pic.I also believed the topic was verboten as the great admins will shut down any thread that gets infected by it (yeah way to go SRD <emotion>:P</emotion>)

Why do magic hat believers feel the need to push them on other people?
Posted 14 years ago # -
I think it is a bit of both, I feel pushed not to wear one
not once have I said anyone else should wear one
just don't tell me your opinion not to is superiorPosted 14 years ago # -
well, y'know wars have been fought about such things

Obviously some pro-helmet, hi-viz types do promote them - through photos, campaigns and legislation - but find me one post on here where someone has done that, and I'll eat said helmet.
Posted 14 years ago # -
ditto, only with some fava beans and a nice chianti

Well I have never ever started a helmet war but I have been told off in the street and called stupid for not protecting my brain on web pages and email.
I understand why I reply to this.
Why do people who believe in them feel they have to promote them? How does me not wearing one affect the wearers?
Posted 14 years ago # -
I guess for the same reson those who don't believe in them shout at those who wear them
People who promote them abviously think by not wearing one you are encouragig others to do the same and in their eyes this is a bad thing
On the flip side those that don't believe in them think wearing one makes other people think they are the norm

"Why do people who believe in them feel they have to promote them? "
Why do some people who believe in them feel they have to promote them?
Posted 14 years ago # -
I have never shouted at someone for wearing one. I have been told off for not doing so. Sometimes by people on bikes, sometimes just by people.
Even if you do think my not wearing one encourages other people to not wear one how does that impinge on someone who does wear one?
Posted 14 years ago # -
I have to say you'd have to be a bit a zealot to shout at another adult cyclist for /wearing/not wearing a helmet.
I'm generally a nice (albeit slightly sarcastic) person, but I don't think I would really have enough concern about someone else's head to actively do anything about it.
It's hard enough to elicit a nod from most folk on bikes, let alone a discourse on protective/non protective millinery.
As for people not on bikes commenting. They're an effing menace, walking on pavements etc.

@wfb - "Even if you do think my not wearing one encourages other people to not wear one how does that impinge on someone who does wear one?"
I said: "People who promote them obviously think by not wearing one you are encouraging others to do the same and in their eyes this is a bad thing"
I personally don't care if you don't wear a lid. I hope you don't get injured but I fully understand that is your choice.

@Stepdoh - very chic
thanks for supporting my campaign for avatars ;)Posted 14 years ago # -
Well you can take away our threads but you'll never take away our helmet debate!!!!!!! I don't wear a helmet 'cause I like 'em I HAVE to it's protective gear and if it's good enough for DEVO.......
Posted 14 years ago # -
OK, but outwith you personally, why do people who believe in them feel that other people not wearing one is a bad thing?
I understand why people wearing them affects me but how does it work the other way?
You let yourself down a little here,
"I hope you don't get injured but I fully understand that is your choice."
.In much the same way as I understand it is your choice to increase your risk of serious injury by wearing one. However, you were the one to get in that kind of remark first. Why did you feel a need to do so?
