Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

    Linking to specific documents in the planning portal doesn't work.

    The plan of the bike parking can then be found by searching the page for "composite cycle storage".

    I agree about the difficulty of manoeuvring a cargo bike into those spaces, and I struggle to believe the spacing of the racks meets the minimum standards, although I've not got a ruler out to check.

    I also note that the plan says "All provisions comply with the Council Cycle Parking Factsheet C7". They do not. The factsheet says that at least 20% of cycle parking is for non-standard cycles; this plan has 10%.

    Spokes reviews the cycle parking in planning applications which are on Development Management committee agendas. There is an utterly infuriating level of "It doesn't meet the guidance, but we don't care." from almost everyone.

    @chdot - where did you find this, what stage of the planning process is it at?

    I was looking for something completely unrelated.

    "More bike parking"

    Specifically more spaces for non-standard cycles. The plans had 5% of cycle parking for non-standard cycles. The added condition increases that to 10%.

    (Council guidance is for minimum of 20%.)

    Isn't it just amazing how Conservative councillors can bang on about The Wull O' The Peepul for days on end and portray every consultation not treated as a referendum as a betrayal of democracy itself when the subject is cycle lanes, but all of a sudden when it's their pals in the construction industry the proles and their silly little park have to take a back seat to the practicalities.

    Well @Yodhrin, the Nicene Creed was established when the bishop arguing that Jesus was both God and the son of God was more convincing in his argument to Constantine than the Bishop arguing that Jesus was the son of God.

    I confess I have been back asking North Berwick people who think it is funny to break parking meters if it is ok if I can come Round and smash their windows.

    They dont like me.

    Some use very choice language.

    I have asked - which is worse? The War in Iran or paying for Parking. Seems to be the latter.

    The URL for the very useful ArcGIS map of all bike parking racks in Edinburgh has recently changed - it's now https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/aae8196c48c144b1bff24fd29e159ef2

    If you haven't seen this before it shows the location of all bike racks and their capacity. I find this useful to reference when I'm going somewhere and am unsure where to park, I usually then cross reference with Google Street View.

    The one I use most frequently is https://cycleparking.net/ - saved to my home screen - I believe it might be Alex fae Spokes that built it, but pulls data on parking locations and capacities from Open Street Map. For mobile use, might be easier than the ArcGIS but YMMV!

    It appears to be an import of OpenStreetMap data, so they probably should've removed all the objects with access=private or made them a different colour/shape.

    On one hand it's good to have the OSM data used as it'll be the most up to date, however sometimes datasets from councils etc will have things missing from OSM so it would be good to be able to do a comparison with their own data as well.

    It does seem to be OpenStreetMap data! But quite old as it does include at least one spot I removed a year ago.

    Also ripping off OSM data and then putting a copyright notice of:

    is a violation of OSM's license

    That looks to me like the same set of data as the other map which also matches the data on the council portal here: https://data.edinburghcouncilmaps.info/datasets/4771acc22eaa47b18642b225fcb390dc_139/explore?location=55.927263%2C-3.259765%2C0.00

    That was last updated in June.

    I've made a few changes to my map, I reduced the matching distance to 10m and that increased the list of Council but not in OSM to 88. We've added a few missing ones to OSM and added an exclusion list for Council data that doesn't exist or are in the wrong place; currently 19 entries Excluded and 64 left to investigate.

    One thing that is in interesting is that it looks like parking doesn't get removed from the Council Dataset once it's removed, for example there was parking on Leith Walk from before the trams works still showing up.

    Another curious one is the council show Bike parking on Sibbald Walk near the UK Goverment building. But there is nothing there. Curious if this was added them removed for some reason, as some bike parking there would make sense.

    Nice work with the map/comparison. Was actually going to suggest increasing the matching distance to 15m (provided the capacity/covered is also the same) as there was some not matched that looked like they should be. Can the columns be match sortable (especially the capacity diff) in the matched table?

    The council list has three at Ocean Terminal's demolished parking which were removed from OSM two years ago. And a few others I looked at were not visible on any Street View images over the years, strange.

    Maybe something to mention for the next edi.bike issue? :)

    Matching distance is a tricky one, as some are different enough such as different sides of the road that they are worth checking. But if there is a ref:GB:cec with the council ID then it will match to that if it's within 30m.

    If there are any CEC one's that we should ignore then send the ID's to me@ chrisfleming dot org and I will exclude them.

    I've also make the columns sort.
