Correction to my post yesterday - I think the new racks are at the top of Dundas St near Glass & Thompson, not on Hanover St... Got confused by the sensation of being in a taxi for a 5 minute trip...

Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

Fimm The Dutch stands are not wheelbenders, they support the front wheel in a tray, just like many bike racks on trailers and cars (and buses). A wheelbender clips the fornt wheel at just one point, whereas a good tray holds it at 2 well separated points, often with a locking point for the frame (see Tulip, Beta, etc). BTW I've never seen the Waterloo racks so full - but they have sucked in all the random parking, and Network Rail informally work with their the car park contractor to clear dumped bikes. Security at Waterloo improved overnight when smoking was banned on the station, and the bike park also became the smoking lounge.
With a means of bike location cycle parking can deal with the argument that parked bikes are untidy, and achieve high parking densities. This is why 2-tier racks can improve capacity, but are not the only way to do this - as they need around 2.6 metres headroom to fit properly, and 4.0m from the rear face to the clearance to properly roll bikes in to the top tray. The other advantage is for the user, as with high demand it is possible to park Sheffield stands to around 350% of theoretical capacity (7 bikes on 1 hoop) and create real problems extracting each bike separately
The Beta is a particularly interesting system as with front wheels overlapped and hi-lo offset you get a bike every 19-20cm, and 26 bikes parked on a footprint 3m x 5m (plus access gangways). This comes pretty close to the density that can be delivered with 2 tier parking and it is worth noting that any claim of 1 bike per sq. m or better, including access should be rigorously checked to make sure it is workable.
Glasgow's annual programme of 200-300 on-street racks per year, with monitored sampling sites shows remarkable results (over 30% year on year growth and 1 site with over 1000% increase. Edinburgh has never had such a rolling programme

Time for a campaign?

@Tulyar " I've never seen the Waterloo racks so full" I assume you're commenting on my photo, which is, as you say, of the bike racks outside Waterloo Station in London. I'd never seen anything like it, and thought it looked like the descriptions of Dutch station bike parking I've read.
It was taken during the Olympics which may explain why they were particularly full - I guess a combination of extra care to make sure bikes got parked where they should, and more people cycling - we'd just come back off the train from watching the cycling Time Trials (I have some photos of piles of bikes used by people who'd come to watch those, too).

I'd actually correct that - I've never seen the new racks so full. In 2006 the W&C Tube was closed for 6 months and the old Sheffield stands were rammed full such that it often took 2 people to extricate a bike.

Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but the cycle parking outside St James Centre is awful. It consists of 3 sheffield racks on a steeply sloping cobbled piece of dead ground, out of sight of the shoppers/entrances. Ideal for vandals to vandalise your pride&joy after it has partly rolled away from the rack (making it look abandoned).
The best place to park bikes would be on the railings outside the Princes St/Waterloo Pl entrance, except that St James Centre management have kindly put up "Please do not attach bicycles to these railings" signs up everywhere.
I complained to St James Centre about this about 1 year ago, and they sent me a letter saying they were 'reviewing' the cycle parking facilities. But it seems they have quietly forgotten about it...

@edd1e_h I had the misfortune to use that yesterday! I only found it because of signs up on the main concourse saying you weren't allowed to lock your bike to the railings and that there was some "dedicated cycle parking" down the steps. There's a huge amount of space up on the concourse they could use, it's frankly rubbish what is available.
Then again it's such a bike-unfriendly place is Leith Street / top of Broughton Street that I rarely have any call to go there.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Princes St still completely lacking too.I managed to squeeze in on the railings n Hanover st yesterday, but it's embarrasing and ridiculous not to have any decent cycleparking.

Are there not some half decent racks around the other side, opposite Multrees Walk/bus station? That's what I used last time I was there. Used to be some racks outside the Picardy Place entrance to John Lewis which were quite good. Have these been removed? (Guess who hasn't been Chrimbo shopping yet).

For visits to the St James Centre, I lock up on the railings near the back entrance to John Lewis (the kitchenware one) on Little King Street. Hoist your bike up onto the concrete base of the railings, loop the lock chain around a couple of times to secure it, job done.

Re: princes st, I found loads of bicycle parking all along rosé street recently, typically at each junction of castle st, Frederick st, Hanover st etc.

Report some unbolted cycle racks to the council, you' think they might bolt them back in.
You'd think.
Would you seriously think that even our ingenious council would just cable-tie another cycle rack to the loose one in an effort to make it harder to be off with for anyone that didn't bring a small screwdriver, biro or nail scissors?

Snip-snip-snip, load onto a Carry Freedom and take it home, concrete-concrete-concrete, job's a good 'un.
A wee Sheffield stand at home would be quite useful.

Going back to the origins of the thread, rumour has it that the pilot on street residents cycle parking scheme, might actually be installed in Novembers, but I am not holding my breath.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Just came across this thread again, and noticed that it was updated with the and finally post.
The pilot on street residents cycle parking scheme has now been running for a year now, what are peoples thoughts on it?
For me personally it has been great, I no longer have to carry my hack bike up and down stairs. There have been no security issues with the bike store, although there are a few dents due to poor driving skills.

We were promised new racks outside the Tesco at Roseburn and also on Station Road. HankChief will be particularly disappointed if the latter aren't getting done.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Fountainbridge next to Sainsbury's is good news.
Sorry about the Tesco one. There's only a hoop there, though you can take your cycle inside.

Don't forget, if you want to suggest places for bike parking just send an email to cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk (they welcome suggestions and keep a list).

Roseburn Terrace is short of cycle stands as well. Shame, considering how half the shop-owners there describe themselves as "keen cyclists".
Posted 8 years ago # -
@Rosie:the minutes from one of the recent community council meetings said that some more racks were due to be installed/existing ones replaced but they don't appear on this list.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Realised how negative my reply was. Meant to say: it's great we're getting new racks and they are in some really useful places*. Apologies to any council cycling officers reading...
*just need some nice safe segregated routes to get to them now.

I thought we were getting some on Station Road Corstorphine...

Here is a parking experiment which I proposed for Edinburgh three years ago. Now is a good time to start it...
Posted 8 years ago # -
Not Edinburgh, but Inverkeithing Rail Station has a spearkly new tiered bike rack with room for 72 bikes. With existing capacity at ~8 that is a big improvement.
Only counted 4 bikes there when I went past, but early days, and if it and equivalents at other stations became full regularly at commute time, Edinburgh will see some benefit.

"Don't forget, if you want to suggest places for bike parking just send an email to cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk (they welcome suggestions and keep a list)."
Apparently CEC is about to have another round of action.
Get your suggestions in.

I might email and suggest some near Mimi's on the Shore. The proximity to the end of the Water of Leith Walkway section of the NEPN, the restriction of traffic on the Shore, wider pavements and the combination of Mimi's, Cafe Truva and the Leith beer Co has meant a growing numbers of people cycling here to spend money and enjoy themselves - and their bikes being chained to every available railing and barrier in the area.
I suspect that the Roseburn shops could see the same kind of increase in custom if they weren't so blinkered as to imagine that all their custom comes from car drivers who need to park right outside their door!

I've just emailed to suggest Main St in D'Main's.
I'll be there tomorrow and locking up to my usual bit of fence.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Still no bike parking on Cadzow Place/Montrose Terrace in Abbeyhill. Lots of local businesses, including Eastside Bikes, could benefit if there were some bike hoops installed on the numerous motor vehicle parking/loading restrictions signposts...
