Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

Reply from the council. That was quick!
"Coincidentally, there are cycle hoops to be installed at No. 32 and No.52 Montrose Terrace in the next 4 weeks and I have already received emails requesting Cadzow Place for cycle parking. This is likely to happen in the next phase of cycle parking installations over the summer."

Station Rd Corstorphine is on the list.
& they're going to try to fit some in nearer to Sainsbury's

Yes, I hear maybe 120 new racks can be installed in the current financial year, so get suggesting where you want them and maybe they will appear

@stickman, here it is, whole of silver knowes promenade
Me Balerno Main Street, thriepmuir and Harlaw reservoirs, the apple pie bakery etc
Ask and they will stick em in ( not apple pie, it is in south Lanarkshire)
Seriously, I cannot fathom why this is buried and I am having to punt it? Maybe just has wrong title?

Cheers for the prompt gembo. I've just sent an email suggesting more racks at Cramond/Silverknowes and also beside the Tesco at Roseburn (although I asked for this at the last round of installations)

Nice one stickman. I will chase up the reason why tesco'stescos racks did not go in. I got distinct impression they really want to see those fingers (well that is vic and Bob) they really want to see those suggestions, it they don't have many as it stands and they do have the racks.
Not sure why predictive spelling went with tesco'stescos but good for me.

Quick response from the cycle team:
I have already got two or three racks going in by the Tesco at the end of Russell Road in phase 1 of the installations happening over the next 4 weeks. In addition, I have noted the Boardwalk Café, the roundabout before the walkway to Crammond Island and Crammond Village to receive racks – approximately three at each location

As per the list upthread, several new Sheffield Extra/Bilton stands have just gone in on the corner of Albany St/Broughton St. List says 2 but I thought I glimpsed more as I passed. Will doublecheck in the morning.

When you see new bike racks appearing, can I also suggest you check if they are in OpenStreetMap, and add them or update them if not?
OSM is really useful for finding parking... See the separate thread for "finding bike parking with OSM"

"The initiative to increase bike parking has been jointly funded by Sustrans, who manage funding for Transport Scotland, the Scottish Government’s transport agency, and contributed £66k as part of its commitment to the city’s 20mph scheme. The Council has also matched Sustrans’ £66k from its cycling budget."

Added to OSM two new pairs of racks on the newly widened bit of Easter Rd
One pair outside Iceland and the other pair opposite the end of Montgomery St
Good for beer stops at Cornelius ;)

@Klaxon, aye noticed the racks opposite Montgomery Street on the way home last night. Really good to see.
Also good for cafe stops: two great places right next to the racks. :-)

Stupids - installations of bike parking parallel to kerb (Montgomery Street) and wall (at SNPG).
The answer is 12 degrees. At this angle 2 things happen:
1) you can put racks closer together along the face of the wall or kerb and park a bike on each side within a strip under 90cm wide, and still get bikes in & out easily
2) racks CAN be installed as close to the wall as in the RSPG example and bikes can be parked on both sides easily.I recall sending this detail to Edinburgh Council around 20 years ago, and it featured in a report on cycle parking for DETR/Southampton Council at the time.
Just also seen some neat and very simple bike parking that gets 26 bikes stored on a footprint 3m x 5m matching the density you get with 2 tier units without the cost and maintenance liabilities of the moving parts. Note her that 2-tier systems are frequently installed with sub standard space in front of the units to load bikes and wheel them in.

Added the Portrait Gallery racks to OSM.
@SRD: OSM gives a capacity of 24 bikes, but this looks larger.

Stephan - you mean at Haymarket? I'm slightly surprised that the old racks only had capacity for 24... those are the new ones which are not fully open yet (you can see the barriers in SRD's photo) - when they are I can do a count if that would be useful.

2 Photos from the Grassmarket and Cowgate. Given how wide the pavements are did the new bike stands really have to be placed along the pavement edge?
CEC is supposed to be reducing street clutter, so will they be removing the bollards which are now superfluous?

@fimm Yes, Haymarket. I don't go there often, only looked at OSM:

OSM also shows some in front of Ryries (the little blue square, no capacity info given) - are they still there, and how many?

@Fountainbridge The Grassmarket looks awful. Blocking the crossing, but also why only 2 racks when there is so much space?
It seems that the people who plan or install them haven't quite worked out how to place racks in unused spaces where they are not in the way, but also visible enough (not hidden behind bins etc.), and also that in key busy locations you don't just need one or two but dozens.
